How important is duty in the path of devotion? Bhagawan lovingly, yet firmly, reminds us today!
I want to draw your attention to something very important. This is the root cause for our country, Bharat, coming to such a sorry state today. People do not perform their duty properly. What is the use of such people listening about bhakti (devotion)? Be it a doctor or a lawyer, it is most important that they perform their duty with dedication. If the patients are suffering and the doctors run to the Mandir to participate in the Arati of Swami, can this be devotion? It is no devotion at all. It is sheer madness and foolishness. Look after the patients under your charge with sincerity and earnestness so that they do not undergo any suffering at all. This is your Seva, this is your duty. People who neglect their duty this way can never develop devotion, however much they listen about devotion. What is the use of pouring payasam (sweet pudding) into a vessel that has ten holes? The vessel will always remain empty, however much is the payasam you pour into it. Likewise, if your heart has the holes of selfishness and self-interest, what is the use of stuffing it with devotion? Therefore, what is important is that you should perform your duty properly and sincerely.

What is the difference between charity and sacrifice? Bhagawan lovingly points out the distinction to us today.
There is a lot of difference between charity and sacrifice. Some people, however, do not observe any difference between them. This is a great mistake. People may give a little bit in charity of what they have, keeping almost their entire wealth intact to fulfil their selfish ends. There is selfishness and self-interest in this act of charity. But there is not even an iota of selfishness in an act of sacrifice. Sacrifice lies in giving to others what you like most and love dearly. What is it that is dearest to man? That is his life. Nothing else is dearer to man than his life. What then is the real meaning of sacrifice? It means to give even one’s own life for the sake of others. Many people boast that they have performed a great act of sacrifice by giving their land in charity to others. But actually, they may have done it for the sake of name and fame. It is not a sacrifice in the true sense. “Immortality is not attained through action, progeny or wealth; it is attained only by sacrifice” - this is one of the most important teachings of Indian culture. True sacrifice is changeless and matchless. It makes a man immortal. The body is unreal and mortal. It is bound to perish and disintegrate. But Atma is imperishable, eternal, changeless, and immortal. One can have the experience of the immortal Atma only through sacrifice.

As spiritual aspirants, what is the mental attitude we must try and develop, first and foremost? Bhagawan lovingly points out to us this important lesson in Sadhana today.
The individual full of Aham (I-ness) loves to exercise authority over others. He will not like listening to others. Even if the others’ counsel is good for him, due to his stubbornness, he will not like it. Such individuals see everything through ‘a jaundiced eye’, coloured by the smoke of self-conceit. “My words are true,” “My opinion is correct,” “My deeds are right,” they feel, and thus they spend their days in such stubbornness! Such behaviour is very harmful for sadhakas (spiritual aspirants). The sadhaka must be eagerly looking forward to any helpful criticism or suggestion, or advice from any quarter. When he makes any mistake, he should not try to justify himself. It can lead to unwarranted argumentations and if he does not succeed in arguments, it will lead to vengeful fighting. Do not struggle to earn the esteem of the world. Do not feel humiliated or angry when the world does not recognise you or your merits. Learn these first and foremost, if you are an aspirant and put them into practice. You should not fall into joy, when you are being praised; therein lies a deadly trap, which might even lead you astray and endanger your progress. Try to learn and absorb things that are good for you from the advice of others and behave accordingly. Train yourself to take insult and criticism as deviations and digressions.

How should we deal with obstacles on the spiritual path? What do they indicate to us? Bhagawan lovingly answers this important question for us today.

While practising sadhana, one must follow the rules laid down in scriptures or follow the commands of the Guru or that of God. While following these rules or commands, one should not worry whatever obstacles come. Continue with one’s prescribed sadhana and achieve success, even at the cost of one’s life. Some people say that they are following Swami’s commands, but they are facing many obstacles in their sadhana. This is not the correct attitude. In fact, if one follows Swami’s instructions carefully and correctly, no obstacles will come. If obstacles come, it means one has not followed the commands correctly! Before undertaking sadhana, there are certain things which one should know. Sadhana refers to an activity undertaken for achieving one’s goal or purpose in life. The sadhaka has to decide what he wants to achieve, what his purpose is. Then sadhana has to be carried on until one achieves that goal. If one undertakes sadhana without knowing these aspects, one will falter, and face obstacles and problems. Then one may lose faith in the guru, which could result in a total fall and destruction of oneself. So, one must be very careful about doing sadhana.

What is the real source of human suffering and bo***ge? Bhagawan lovingly and clearly explains to us today.

Our life has its roots in the Atma, and it grows through the agitated waves of living. It can never uproot itself from its Atmic source. Man has, through the ages, sought liberation and struggled for freedom from bo***ge. But he has no correct appreciation of what he has to liberate himself from, what the bo***ge is from which he has to be freed. Many are not even aware that they are imprisoned and are bound. So, they do not even try to free themselves. Is the family, the wife and children, the prison? Are riches, properties, and possessions the bonds? Are attractions and aversions the bonds that curb him? No. None of these binds him. The tightest bond that limits his feelings and deeds is his ignorance of who he really is. Until one is aware of the Atma (divine soul), one is certain to be tossed from grief to grief, with intervals of joy.

What is the precious message Bharat has been blessed to share with the world? Bhagawan clearly explains and inspires us to dedicate ourselves to reinstating the glory of this sacred land.
The glory and majesty of the Lord are imminent in the universe, as a fragrance in the air, as heat in the fire, or as butter in milk. He is the string that passes through and holds together all the beads. To know Him as such, to realise that He is the source, sustenance, and summum bonum of all this creation is the end and aim of human life. That is the sum and substance of the teachings of all the scriptures that man has inherited from the past, in all languages and in all climes. All religions are but essays at demarcating the path towards that consummation. All moral codes regulate human speech, action, and feelings in order to enable man to see the path more clearly and to make his steps firmer thereon. India is the land where this precious knowledge was gained and spread by ardent seekers and sages. But today, we have to deplore the decadence of these ideals and the downfall of Indians who have descended to the level of ridiculing the heights of spiritual bliss these sages attained. The time has come now to revere the culture that granted them that vision and that victory, to rededicate yourselves to the pilgrimage towards truth, to discover in the jungle of manifoldness the basic unity, which is the reality.

How does understanding the divinity within everyone transform our attitude toward others? Bhagawan lovingly explains to us today.
Even if others trouble you and pose problems for you, bear it with patience, believing that it will do you only good. The body, which is made up of five elements, has to fall and perish one day or another. The indweller of the body is eternal, is birthless and deathless and is not bound by any chains of bo***ge. In fact, this indweller is God Himself! When a beggar begs for food, he utters, Bhavati Bhiksham Dehi! He is really begging from the Dehi, the indweller and not you. Recognise the truth that he is praying to God in you for alms. It is your ignorance if you think that he is begging from you. It amounts to arrogance. Divinity resides in everyone, irrespective of whether one is a prince or a pauper. You have to adore this Divine principle in everyone and love them, but love should be selfless. Love bereft of attachment to the body flows equally towards everyone.

Sai Inspires from Prasanthi Nilayam - April 28, 2026

What is one necessary attitude we must develop to lead a joyful life? Bhagawan explains with beautiful examples for us today.
For man, there are two kinds of states in this world. They are: Hita (Pleasant) and Ahita (Unpleasant). Whether the state is pleasant or unpleasant depends on your innermost attitude or outlook. The same object becomes pleasant once and unpleasant on another occasion! The thing welcomed with great fondness at one time becomes hateful at another time, and there is not the desire even to see it. The condition of the mind at those times is the reason to wean so. Hence, everyone must train their mind to be pleasant always. The waters of a river leap from mountains, fall into valleys, and rush through gorges; besides, tributaries join it at various stages, and the water becomes turbid and unclean. So too, in the flood of human life, speed and power increase and decrease. These ups and downs can happen at any moment during life. No one can escape these; they may come at the beginning of life, at the end or in the middle. So, what man must firmly convince himself is that life is necessarily full of ups and downs, and that, far from being afraid and worried over these, one should welcome them. One should not only feel like this, but should be happy and glad, whatever happens! Then, all troubles, whatever their nature, will pass away lightly and quick!

How and why should our devotion mature with time? Bhagawan lovingly explains and guides us on this journey of love and dedication.
Take the Lord to be your father or mother, but only as the first step towards transcending that relationship and merging in the absolute! Do not stop on the steps; enter the mansion they lead to. The Atma sambandham (spiritual connection) is the everlasting and unchanging sambandham. As a first step, you use the flower, the lamp, the incense and so on to worship the Saguna form (God envisioned with attributes). Soon, your devotion moves on to newer forms of dedication, newer offerings that are purer, more valuable, and worthier of your Lord! You feel that you should place before the Lord something more lasting than mere flowers and something more yours than incense! You feel like purifying yourselves and making your entire life one fragrant flame! That is real worship, real bhakti. Do not come to Me with your hands full of trash, for how can I fill them with grace when they are already full? Come with empty hands and carry away My treasure, My love.
