“Good success has the essence and thumbprint of God; you will feel the pleasure of God! [Leadership] is not about church growth or promoting your brand. It’s always about God. When we lose sight of that, we lose everything,” Pastor Chew Weng Chee declared at the Pastors and Leaders Conference hosted by SIBKL

It was a time of meaningful learning, empowerment and fellowship as 885 pastors, ministry workers and lay leaders from across the nation gathered for the second Pastors and Leaders Conference […]

Growing up in a Buddhist family, Evelyn Teo had a reverence for faith. Yet, God felt distant and impersonal. Religion was part of culture, but it was not a relationship. That changed one Christmas when a friend invited her to church.

“I went out of curiosity, but from the moment I stepped in, I felt something different, warmth, joy, and a love I could not explain.”

She returned the following Sunday. During worship, tears streamed down her face. The message felt deeply personal, as though it was speaking directly to her heart. When the altar call was given, she sensed a clear invitation, not into religion, but into relationship.

“That was the moment I said yes. I accepted Christ as my Saviour and Lord,” she shared.

Ong Sook Yee cannot pinpoint exactly when she got lost. “It was a gradual feeling that grew over time, and one day I woke up not knowing what I was doing on this earth. I didn’t know why I existed,” she says.

Sook Yee, who also goes by Sooky, grew up in a staunch Buddhist family, but in her own words, believed that there was a God somewhere out there.

In 2010, she moved to Melbourne to pursue her undergraduate studies. There, she fell into depression. It was a season of emptiness. “I was just living day to day, soulless and without a purpose,” she says gravely.

After graduation, she returned to Malaysia still in a fog. The days went by without start or end until someone invited her to church.

Back then, Sooky remembers, she had a fear of “Jesus”, sentiments shaped by past interactions with Christian relatives that were not pleasant.

From a young age, I’ve known Jesus but not deeply. As a Klang boy, I would follow my parents to church every week, serve in the media ministry, attend Royal Rangers and even help to organise special events.

Though I looked faithful on the outside, my walk with God had become routine. By the time college began, that lack of depth caught up with me, and the world’s pull grew stronger.

I decided to toe the line between Christ and the world, believing I needed to find a ‘balance’. As the months rolled by, I began to attend church less and spend more time with friends outside.

I had always understood ‘ministry’ as serving God within the church, so when I became a mother, it felt like that part of my life had taken a backseat. My priorities shifted entirely, revolving around my child. In the midst of it all, my faith journey seemed to take a dip. I hadn’t even realised I was losing sight of God.

I found myself trapped in a cycle of exhaustion. But then came my aha moment when I refocused on God and recognised that motherhood itself is His gift to me. This wasn’t an overnight revelation, but an ongoing journey of refining and growth with Him.

Exactly 30 years ago, I shared in Asian Beacon the miraculous healing in 1994 of my then 12-year-old son, Marcus, who was diagnosed with Stage 2 malignant brain tumour, medulloblastoma.

The primary tumour was the size of an egg and was removed by surgery but the the tumour seedlings that had spread inside the brain could not be removed surgically without damaging the brain. But our God caused the seedlings to miraculously disappear even before the start of radiation.

A blessing also came out of this ordeal. Two days after Marcus was admitted to Subang Jaya Medical Centre in Kuala Lumpur, I decided to go back to Malacca for a day to clear outstanding matters. Upon my arrival, I went straight to my late mother and my late mother-in-law to brief them on Marcus’ condition.

As idol and ancestral worshippers, I knew they would seek all kinds of spirits and temple mediums for my son. I forbade them to do so but instead asked them to call upon the name of Jesus for healing of Marcus.

For Sarath and Muriel's family, caring for their parents (and generations before) is a great honour. They consider it a blessing to live with them, caring for them and learning from their wisdom. They contribute to the rhythm of our home and offer support in meaningful ways, adding richness to our family life.

One of the most heartwarming fruits has been seeing their young children grow in awareness and compassion for the elderly.

As children of God and followers of Christ, we have a responsibility to care for our parents and grandparents. For Sarath and Muriel Kumar, this begins in their home. By […]
