Mission Limbahau
The landscape of the Limbahau hill was very strategic that prompted the then missionary, Rev. Bernard Kurz, a Tyrolese from Austria in the year 1887 to buy part of Himbaau hill at the cost of $21 only from 4 families. He then built a house and the first church on top of the hill in 1888 and named the church “Mary Queen of the Most Holy Rosary Limbahau”.At the same time, he also i
ntroduced the formal education system using the church premise. Bernard Kurz had deligently learned to master and understand the Kadazan Papar dialect in order to be able to communicate with the locals and he was well loved by them. He continued the mission first established by Fr. Pundleider. As the church grew, a 2nd bigger with strong structure church was built to accommodate the growing church. The Baptismal Register Book of Limbahau (1889 – 1945) meanwhile recorded 120 baptisms, the first being Banaik Sindurang @ Joseph. Kurz’s service in Limbahau was at times assisted by Fr. Dibona. Kurz died on 1st Sep 1895 at age 43 years and was buried in Limbahau hill. Aloysius Louis Goosens (1888 – 1935) from Holland was administered to Limbahau to assist Fr. Kurz to further continued the mission to bring Christ message to the locals in Limbahau and the surroundings. He had brought about changes in terms of infra-structures and with strong financial stand. In 1898,Fr. Aloysius Louis Goosens established the St. Aloysius Convent and the “white sisters” congregation with 4 white sisters stationed here. They were Sisters Dominic, Sister Gerarda, Sister Bernarda and Sister Bonaventure. With the growing numbers of baptised Catholics, a much bigger with stronger structure Church was built in place of the old one. A multipurpose 2 storey building was also built to house the residence and office on the first floor and as school and hostel on the ground floor. It was in 1923 when St. Mary’s School was first established with the first 3 teachers assisting the priest, namely Mr. Alexander Rowan, Mr. Athanasius Anggang and Mr.Anselmus Aman Sham. Goosens bought several lands from the locals including 100 acres in Purak which currently housed the Holy Family home. He had served Limbahau parish for 48 years and had died at age 80 years on 14 August 1935 and was buried at HRL hill. Goosens also initiated the first Kadazan Papar dictionary ie the TanggaaPapar which he established in 1924 and had been a reference for those priests who had served Limbahau mission. The 4th Holy Rosary Church was built in 1979 at the cost of RM500,000.00 then assisted by the then Berjaya Government. The blessing the new church was graced by Rev. Bishop Simon Fung and declared opened by the then Assistant Chief Minister, Datuk James Ongkili on 12 July 1980. Aloysius Tung was the then Parish Priest. The Holy Rosary Limbahau Hill is located about 4 km from Papar town and 45 km from Kota Kinabalu. The surrounding as you all can see, on our left runs the Paparriver while on the right is the vast padifield and local houses along the old Papar road. Down the hill is the St. Mary’s Kindergarten, Primary and Secondary Schools. HRL hill houses the main HR Church, Priest’s hse, Old dewan, the new Fr. Augustine Amandus’ Hall (Hall & Rector Office), the Grotto and Memorial ground. The new buildings (new hall, grotto & memorial ground) were erected in view of the 2ndmajor landslides that occurred on 06th August 2012 @4.00 am which damaged badly the old rector and hostel. With the prompt action and decisions by the Parish Priest and Parish Finance Committee, immediate application was sought from the State Government through JKR to work out on the costing and thus the transformation of HRL hill.
