Today we commemorate the Feast of the Exaltation of the Cross.
The Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, which we commemorate today, September 14th, holds deep historical and theological significance in the Catholic Church. It celebrates the instrument of our salvation and Christ's victory over sin and death.
๐Historically, the feast originated in Jerusalem, commemorating two key events:
The Discovery of the True Cross: Tradition holds that in the 4th century, Saint Helena, the mother of Emperor Constantine, discovered the True Cross of Jesus in Jerusalem. This discovery was a profound moment for the early Church, confirming the physical reality of Christ's Passion.
๐The Dedication of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre: The feast also marks the dedication of the Basilica of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem in 335 AD, which was built over the sites of Christ's crucifixion and resurrection. A portion of the True Cross was venerated there.
Theologically, the feast "exalts" the Cross not as an instrument of torture, but as the glorious throne upon which Christ offered Himself for our redemption. It reminds us that:
