ents. It is the priest’s job to lead the community in sacramental ritual and prayer. This is especially so when the church celebrates the Eucharist. In those sacramental moments, by the grace of the Holy Spirit, the priest embodies both the church and Jesus, a sign of the unity that exists between Jesus and all his people. Thirdly, the priest is a shepherd to the faithful and a fisherman for those who have lapsed or have not yet heard the Gospel. These are the great biblical symbols applied by Jesus to the apostles. A priest, again by the grace of the Holy Spirit, must be both of these. The shepherd is to care and look after his sheep so that not one should be lost and the fisherman is to catch people for Jesus and bring them into God’s Kingdom.
