Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche and His Indian Students.
Once in Bodh Gaya, a group of Indian students approached Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche after a teaching.
They were educated, curious, and slightly frustrated. One student said honestly, Rinpoche, we respect Buddhism deeply, but we don’t understand why we need rituals, prayers, and devotion. Isn’t wisdom enough?
Rinpoche smiled and asked them, When you are sick, do you only read medical books—or do you actually take the medicine?
The students laughed and fell silent. Rinpoche continued gently: Wisdom is knowing the path. Practice is walking it.
Rituals are not for the Buddha—they are for your distracted mind. Another student asked, But India is the land of Buddha.
Why do we feel we lost something?
Rinpoche replied, India never lost the Dharma. Indians lost confidence in it. Tibetans preserved the container; India preserved the soil. Now the time is to reunite both.
Later, he told them something very direct: Don’t become Buddhist because it sounds exotic.
Become honest. If Buddhism helps you see your ego clearly, use it. If not, don’t pretend. The students said that moment changed them—not because he gave belief, but because he gave responsibility.
They realized Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche was not trying to create followers— he was creating thinkers with compassion.❤️❤️❤️🙏🙏🙏
