Prayer begins not with what we want from God, but with who God is and the glory his name deserves.

Jesus teaches his disciples to pray, “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name.” Through Christ, we are adopted into God’s family and, by the Spirit, can approach God as our Father with full confidence that he loves us and hears us. To hallow God’s name is to pray that he would display his holiness and that people would regard his name with awe, reverence, and obedience. God hallows his name through the proclamation of the Gospel, the obedience and suffering of his people, and ultimately the return of Christ, when every knee will bow and every tongue confess that he is Lord.

Brothers and sisters, let us pray for God’s name to be hallowed, and then live, obey, suffer, and proclaim in ways that show the world that he is holy.

The God from whom no sinner can escape is the very God who offers restoration in Christ.

Amos 9:1–15 brings God’s judgment to its climax: none shall flee, none shall escape, for the Almighty Creator is the sovereign Judge of all nations. Yet the darkness of judgment is not God’s final word. Though he will sift his people with perfect justice, he promises not to utterly destroy them. In Christ, God restores David’s fallen tent, gathers people from all nations into his eternal kingdom, and promises abundant, secure, and everlasting restoration. The God who judges is the God who restores, giving sinners nothing less than himself in Christ.

Brothers and sisters, let us hope in Christ alone, and live each day in the sure hope that Christ has died, Christ is risen, and Christ will come again.
