AOHD (Archdiocesan Office for Human Development) is the official arm of the Catholic Church, in the Archdiocese of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, entrusted with overseeing matters pertaining to the promotion of charity, integral human development, justice and peace. Fr Bernard Hyacinth SJ as director. In the Beginning

The “Aggiornamento-Renewal” of 1976 brought into focus the need for the Church in Mala

ysia to begin its process of renewal by identifying Integral Human Development (IHD) as one of her core needs. Thus, began the journey of the Church in Malaysia to express her “preferential option for the poor”, through Charity, Integral Human Development, Justice and Peace. This saw the gradual establishment of Offices for Human Development in each of the Arch/Dioceses. The thrust initiated by the Catholic Welfare Services (CWS) / National Office for Human Development (NOHD), as a result of the decision of the Peninsular Malaysia Catholic Bishops, was to set up the Peninsular Malaysia Lenten Campaign Committee. The resultant awareness and education was the vehicle to deepen our understanding of the meaning of our Christian commitment to living the gospels today. Structures for formation, direct services to the needy and administration, including the responsibility to make available financial resources were set up. By the year 1995, the Arch/Dioceses in Peninsular Malaysia adopted Program the Programme Approach as a response to Vision 2020. Our priority areas are as follows:
• outreach to the urban and rural poor
• children with special needs
• migrants and refugees
• indigenous people
• drug users and people with HIV/AIDS

Vision: To be one with God, in solidarity with the whole human family and creation. Mission: To witness to Christ through service, integral human development, justice and peace. Address: c/o APCentre, Level 5, No. 5, Jalan Robertson, 50250 Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

“Together We Walk”, for a more inclusive effort. In celebration of Autism Awareness month, families, children and volunteers came together at Taman Jaya Park in a heartfelt show of support, include acceptance, and love. This meaningful initiative reminds us that true inclusions begins with understanding and grows stronger when we stand side by side as one community.

Today the outgoing AOHD Director marks his last day in office before his sabbatical. We thank Dr. Gary Liew for his unwearying dedication and service towards the Archdiocesan Office for Human Development.

On behalf of the AOHD Team, we welcome the incoming Acting Director, Mr. Aaron Koh and wish him all the best in filling in the role and legacy which is AOHD.

We had a visit from Sr. Mary Win (Sisters of St. Joseph of the Apparition - SJA) from St. Joseph's Convent, Mandalay, Myanmar whom the AOHD Team met while in Mandalay. She had made a visit to AOHD HQ and updated the situation on the ground with another 4.5 magnitude tremor just a week ago.

She had be wanting to visit AOHD since she heard of the Earthquake Relief Work AOHD had done in Myanmar in the past year, in particular around Mandalay which was struck with a devastating 7.7 Magnitude Earthquake last 28th March killing more than 3,800 people in Myanmar – and around 90 more in neighbouring Thailand.

Mandalay, an ancient royal capital hemmed by jungle-clad mountains and the snaking Irrawaddy river, bore the brunt of the damage. While many are slowly rebuilding their homes a year later due to materials being in demand and cost are high, many are still afraid to return to their homes having lived with the trauma for a year now.
