24 July
Feast of St. Charbel Makhlouf, Priest

1828–1898
Maronite Hermit-Priest of Lebanon
The Saint of Twenty-Three Years of Silent Prayer

St. Charbel Makhlouf was born on 8 May 1828 in the village of Bekaa Kafra, Lebanon, into a poor but devout family. From an early age, he showed deep piety. As a young man, he entered the Lebanese Maronite Order and took the religious name Charbel. He first lived the common monastic life at the Monastery of St. Anthony and, after his ordination to the priesthood, devoted himself even more fervently to the pursuit of holiness.

In 1875, he was granted permission to withdraw to the Hermitage of Saints Peter and Paul, attached to the same monastery. There he lived in solitude for twenty-three years, dedicating himself to rigorous fasting, constant prayer, manual labor, and complete service to God.

On 24 December 1898, while celebrating the Holy Eucharist, he suffered a stroke and peacefully entered into eternal life at the age of seventy.

After his death, numerous miracles were reported at his tomb, and his body was found to be remarkably incorrupt.

In 1965, Pope Paul VI beatified him, and in 1977 he canonized him as a saint. Today, St. Charbel is honored as a shining light of the Eastern Catholic Churches and a modern witness to the power of prayer, silence, and the eremitical life.

The St Charbel Makhlouf Adoration Room at the Church of the Holy Rosary, Kuala Lumpur, is a sacred space dedicated to prayer, silence, Eucharistic Adoration, and personal encounter with God. Designed with a peaceful and reverent atmosphere, the Adoration Room invites the faithful to spend quiet moments before the Blessed Sacrament, seeking spiritual strength, healing, and deeper union with Christ. The presence of St Charbel’s statue and image reflects a spirit of holiness, contemplation, and unwavering faith.
St Charbel Makhlouf (1828–1898) was a Lebanese Maronite monk, hermit, and priest well known throughout the world for his deep devotion to the Eucharist, life of prayer, humility, and miraculous intercessions. Even after his death, countless people experienced healing and blessings through his prayers, leading to his canonization by Pope Paul VI in 1977.
The Adoration Room is named after St Charbel because his life was centered on silence, prayer, sacrifice, and complete trust in God — qualities that inspire all who come to adore Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. His example encourages the faithful to seek holiness through prayer and devotion, making him a fitting patron for this sacred place of Eucharistic worship.
