The Structure of the Medicine Buddha Sand Mandala
1 — The Central Buddha
At the very heart of the mandala is the Medicine Buddha (ultimate healer)
This center represents the ultimate source of healing for body, mind, and spirit.
8 — The Eight Buddhas
Surrounding the central figure are the Six Medicine Buddhas, Shakyamuni and Yum Chenmo.
Each Buddha made great vows to heal beings from different forms of suffering.
They represent the universal healing power of all Buddhas.
Together, they form a protective ring around the central Medicine Buddha, multiplying his blessings eightfold.
16 — The Sixteen Bodhisattvas of Healing
Next is a circle of 16 Bodhisattvas, each embodying qualities that support healing and awakening.
These include bodhisattvas such as Avalokiteśvara (Compassion), Mañjuśrī (Wisdom), Vajrapāṇi (Power), Maitreya (Loving-kindness & Future Buddha), and others.
They symbolize the union of wisdom, compassion, and skillful means, which are needed to bring true healing to all beings.
Their presence shows that healing is not just medicine for the body, but also transformation of the mind and heart.
22 — The Twenty-Two Protectors
The outer ring is formed by the 22 Dharma Protectors, wrathful and peaceful deities who safeguard the mandala.
Their role is to protect the healing energy of the Medicine Buddha practice from being disturbed by negative forces.
They also represent the protective power of the Dharma itself — ensuring that the blessings of the mandala reach all beings without obstruction.
The Medicine Buddha mandala is built in sacred layers. Each ring expands the blessings of healing, starting from the center and radiating outward into the world.
✨ The mandala blossoms like a lotus. Next, we will see how protectors guard these blessings.
This is just the beginning of the Medicine Buddha Sand Mandala journey — from the center outward, each ring holds deep symbolism of healing and protection. To know more, stay tuned and follow our Facebook updates as we reveal the details of the more outer rings in the coming days.
