百丈禪師有一句話：見道的人「不異舊時人，只異舊時行履處。」

表面上看起來，悟了道的人還是原來那個人，可是他的心理思想行為，做人處事的道德標準，跟過去完全不一樣了。他們變得不刻意求善，而自然合於善。為求善而行善是痛苦的行為，那是「戒行」，是難行而且是勉為其難的行，所以守戒有功德，值得讚歎！見道的人不談守戒，但是一切自然在戒行之中。
