Wesak Day brings people together from many places, each arriving with their own hopes and prayers, gathering at Mettiyarama.
Some light a lamp. Some sit quietly and listen to the Dhamma. Some take part in the Bathing of the Buddha ceremony, while others enjoy a vegetarian meal with family and friends.
The glow of lamps fills the evening, and the sound of the Dhamma gently flows through the crowd. Smiles are shared, conversations begin, and people who may have never met before find themselves connected through a common faith. For a moment, the busyness of everyday life fades, and the mind becomes a little calmer.
One lamp lights another. One kind thought inspires the next. For more than 2,570 years, this simple act has continued from generation to generation. When a flame is passed from one person to another, it carries more than light—it carries the Buddha’s message of compassion, wisdom, and awakening.
Perhaps the most meaningful part of Wesak Day is not the size of the celebration, but the opportunity to pause, reflect, and reconnect with what truly matters. It is a time to remember the Buddha’s teachings and to bring more kindness, understanding, and mindfulness into our lives.
May this light, passed down through the centuries, continue to shine in the world and guide each of us on our path forward.
