18th day of the Tamil month Aadi. A sacred festival that celebrates life, fertility, prosperity, and the life-giving power of water. It invites the grace of Goddess Lakshmi (Lakshmi Kataksham) into our homes and hearts.
*Significance of Neer Valipadu*
- Aadi Perukku centers around the worship of rivers, seas, and all water bodies.
* It's a powerful day to remove unintentional sins through sincere prayers and water rituals.
* Important day for renewal, abundance, and household peace.
*Special Ritual for Married Women*
* Thali Change Ritual: An auspicious day for women to replace the Thali string, seeking renewed blessings for a happy, long married life.
*Morning Rituals (To-Do List)*
1. Sea Bath (Kaadal Namaskaram) - Take a dip in the sea or river, if possible for spiritual cleansing.
2. Oil Bath - Apply nallenai (cold-pressed sesame oil) and bathe to purify body and mind.
3. Maruthaneer Bath - Bathe using Maruthaneer (medicinal herbal water) for renewal and health.
*Kalayam (Pot) Ritual*
1. Change the Water - Replace the old water in your kalayam (ritual pot).
2. Reapply Turmeric (Manjal) - Clean and apply fresh turmeric on the outside of the pot.
3. Sambrani Cleansing - Spread the sambrani smoke both inside and outside the pot for purification.
4. Fill the Pot With:
- Fresh river water
- Amman Set with the sacred roots & turmeric
- Neem leaves / Veppilai
- Coin & Lime
- Light the camphor on top of the lime, place the lime at the center of your right palm, offer your prayers, and then gently drop the lime into the pot.
*Angusham Mudra Ritual*
* Perform the Angusham Mudra - Point upward and downward over the kalayam.
* Water Goddess Invocation - Call upon the sacred rivers to bless your home with abundance, purity, and grace.While offering prayers to the pot, chant:
*"Om Gangai, Yamunai, Godavari, Saraswathi, Narmatha, Sindhu, Kaveri namaha"*
* Circle around the pot three times
This seals the energy and calls divine presence into the pot.
*Neivethiyam (Offerings)*
On Aadi Perukku, a variety of rice dishes are offered to the Goddess to signify plentiful harvests and household well-being. Prepare 7 types of neivethiyam as per your convenient :
1. Nei Satham – Ghee rice
2. Sambar Satham – Lentil and vegetable rice
3. Thair Satham – Curd rice
4. Chutney Satham – Rice with coconut or coriander chutney
5. Lemon Satham
6. Paal Pongal
7. Vadai /Payasam
8. Vellarikai (Cucumber) - Offered raw/ Cut into pieces
9. Illanir
Arrange all offerings on banana leaves. Place near the kalayam and perform deepa dhoopam aradhanai, followed by prayer and sharing the prasadam with family.
