With the blessings of Svaguru, let us reflect upon the divine love between Mirabai and her Beloved Krishna. Mirabai was born around the 16th century in Kudki, near Merta in Rajasthan. She belonged to a Rajput royal family and developed deep devotion toward Krishna from a very young age. Mirabai did not see Krishna merely as a deity, but as the Supreme Reality (Parabrahman). Her love represented the soul’s longing (Jīvātma) to unite with the Supreme Self (Paramātma). She completely surrendered (Śaraṇāgati) herself to Krishna, which is regarded as an important path in both Vedānta and Bhakti traditions.
When she came of marriageable age, she was married to Rana Kumbha, the prince of Mewar. However, because of her intense Krishna bhakti, she refused to abandon her devotion even after entering royal life. Her detachment from royal comforts reflected Vairāgya (freedom from worldly attachment). During her married life, she faced much criticism and hardship because of her spiritual path. She viewed worldly pleasures, status, and relationships as temporary when compared to Krishna.
Eventually, Mirabai left the palace and traveled to holy places such as Vrindavan and Dwarka, spending her life in devotion and constantly singing the name of Krishna. Her uninterrupted remembrance of Krishna reflected Nididhyāsana (continuous contemplation on the Divine). She sang countless devotional songs expressing longing, joy, separation, and union with Krishna. Her bhajans are still sung throughout India today. Through devotion, her bhajans also conveyed the Advaitic truth that everything exists only because of God.
In her final moments at the temple of Krishna in Dwarka, it is believed that she merged into Krishna Himself, symbolizing complete union with her Beloved Lord. Her life demonstrated that pure Bhakti can itself become a path to Jñāna. This union with Krishna symbolized Mokṣa. In Vedānta, her devotion can be understood as the dissolution of the individual ego into divine consciousness.
The life of Mirabai stands as a timeless example of pure devotion and unconditional love toward Krishna. Despite facing difficulties, opposition, and worldly challenges, her heart never turned away from her Beloved Lord. She chose the path of Bhakti over royal comfort, proving that divine love is greater than worldly attachment.
Through her bhajans, surrender, and unwavering faith, Mirabai continues to inspire countless devotees even today. Her life reminds us that true Bhakti is not merely ritual worship, but the complete surrender of the heart to God. In the end, Mirabai became immortal through her love for Krishna, showing the world that the soul finds its ultimate peace only at the feet of the Divine.
