The Great Lord Karuppaswamy....
There have been many stories of Lord Karuppar in the past. Some relating Him to Lord Rama, some relating Him to Lord Shiva and some to the Goddess.
Here is an untold story of Him. He was born to an Asuran father and a Human mother. This is quite ancient during the times when Asuras where dwelling the earth. This took place in the present day Sembege Cheri, Kerala. His father was literally called 'Othe komban'. Although an Asura, He was pious and righteous. His mother was believed to be of a lower caste but His father accepted her. She conceived and Lord Karuppachan was born. He was named 'Ayyan' on the 28th day.
Born on a special day, He inherited the qualities of Mummurthis( Shiva, Vishnu, Brahma). His hair used to be long (sadai) before He had his first head shave at 3 years of age. As he grew up, He learned all the 18 puranas and sastras, as well as mastering the poojas and ta**ra together with the 18 ayutha vitthaigal(weapon/ martial arts).
Great penance and sacrifice, Goddess Athi Parasakthi Herself appeared before Him and granted boons. He had vanquished many demons and during the times when Kerala was under the influence of many evil tantrics/ maantrikas, He had also destroyed them.
He is very righteous and upholds Dharma and doesn't spare the Gods too. Some Goddesses have been captured and punished by Him.
Tremendous amount of power, He moves like a flash of light. He carries a pantham, circles the chain around his neck, ties a red cloth around His waist on top of black vasthram and of course the sword. Sometimes, He also holds the saatai (whip). This is the pioneer most of Lord Karuppar. He is also referred to as Pathinettam padi Karuppar. Malayala Karuppachan is sort of the other side of the same coin of Pathinettam padi Karuppar. They are vegetarian.
There are a total of 18 of them in this lineage. The number 18 has got many significance. The other karuppars refer to Him as 'Aasan' (master) or 'Easan'. Sangili Karuppar is the youngest or junior most in the hierarchy. He obtained the chain (sangili) as a gift from the Master Lord Karuppachan. Santhana Karuppar is second in command and likes to apply lots of sandalwood. Malayala Karuppachan speaks in Malayalam and circles the saatai around the bakthas neck when He blesses them. The third in line is very fierce and short tempered, as He is the one that does most of the dirty job now. A non vegetarian. There is also Pathinettam padi Sangili Karuppar who is different than the Master and junior Sangili Karuppar. Most of their names that we hear depicts the name of place or their appearance.
As mentioned before, so powerful, that even the Gods prefer to place Him as a guardian deity in the temples. He is a General of an army of bootha ganas. Powerful to the extent that He can't be tied magically/ tantrically, unlike the munis or veeran (with due respect to them).
