CELEBRATING INDIA'S INDEPENDENCE DAY

Today, India celebrates its 80th Independence Day, commemorating the nation’s journey of freedom, resilience, and progress, shaped by the vision, dedication, and contributions of generations of Indians.

Nalanda Buddhist Society Malaysia extends our warmest greetings and best wishes to all our Indian friends on this joyous occasion. India is a nation of remarkable diversity, rich cultural heritage, scientific and technological advancement, and deep spiritual traditions.

For Buddhists around the world, India holds a special place as the sacred land where our Great Teacher, the Buddha, was born, attained Enlightenment, and shared the Dhamma.

May India continue to flourish in peace, harmony, and prosperity, advancing in physical, social, economic, mental, and spiritual well-being for the benefit of all.

MEANINGFUL OUTING FOR FAMILY DHAMMA SCHOOL

On Saturday 25 July, Nalanda Johor Bahru Family Dhamma School students and facilitators embarked on a mindful learning trip to the Tzu Chi Bukit Tiram Recycling and Education Centre.

Students were warmly welcomed by Tzu Chi volunteers with sign-language performances and inspiring sharing sessions on mindful living and environmental care. They also experienced hands-on recycling activities, learning how small daily choices like reducing waste, reusing items, and conserving resources can protect the environment and benefit the community. The trip concluded with tea fellowship and reflection session, making aspiration to live more mindfully and harmlessly towards all living beings and our planet.

We extend our heartfelt appreciation to Bro. Simpson and Tzu Chi volunteers for their kind hospitality, as well as to our facilitators and committee for the effort in making this educational trip a meaningful and enriching journey for the students. May the seeds of compassion and gratitude planted during this trip continue to grow in the hearts of our young learners. Sadhu anumodana!

ANCIENT BUDDHIST SITE OF SARNATH INSCRIBED AS UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE SITE

On Saturday 25 July 2026, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) inscribed the Ancient Buddhist Site of Sarnath in Uttar Pradesh, India, on the UNESCO World Heritage List during the 48th session of the World Heritage Committee. With this inscription, Sarnath is internationally recognised for its Outstanding Universal Value as one of the world's most significant Buddhist heritage sites.

Sarnath is among the four principal places of Buddhist pilgrimage and holds a unique place in the history of Buddhism. It was here that the Buddha delivered His first sermon after Enlightenment, setting in motion the Wheel of Dhamma (Dhammacakka) by expounding the Four Noble Truths and the Noble Eightfold Path. The site preserves many remarkable monuments, including the Dhamekh Stupa, the Ashokan Pillar, monasteries, temples, and archaeological remains that bear witness to over two millennia of Buddhist spiritual, educational, and cultural heritage.

This UNESCO inscription is a timely and joyful blessing for Buddhists around the world. As we observe Āsālha Full Moon Day (Dhamma Day) tomorrow, commemorating the Buddha's first sermon at Sarnath, this international recognition is indeed an auspicious Dhamma Day gift. May it inspire more people to appreciate, preserve, and visit this sacred site, and more importantly, to practise the timeless Dhamma first proclaimed there for the welfare and happiness of all.
