🌟 A Heartfelt Thank You to Mr Harchand Singh Bedi 🌟

We were truly honoured to welcome Mr Harchand Singh Bedi of the SIKH Heritage Museum Malaysia to our Heritage Gallery.

During his visit, Mr Harchand shared invaluable insights about his grandfather, Mr Ujagar Singh Baidy (U.S. Baidy), the King Scout of the 3rd Ipoh Scout Troop of Our Lady of Lourdes Ipoh (Notre Dame de Lourdes). He was attached to the 3rd Troop from 12th December 1925 to 1st June 1930. The 3rd Ipoh Scout Troop was established in the 1920s by Rev. Father Noel Joseph Marie Deredec MEP, with Mr John Emmanuel @ Sambasivam AMN serving as the Scout Master.

In addition to his scouting achievements, Mr U.S. Baidy was also elected as a Member of the First Local Council of Guntong, Ipoh, on 23rd August 1953, a remarkable milestone that reflects his lifelong commitment to community service and leadership.

Mr Harchand Singh Bedi, a respected Malaysian Sikh historian, has dedicated his life to preserving and sharing the untold stories of Sikh soldiers and their contributions to Malaysian history. His first exhibition on Sikh Bravery in Military History was launched in 2007, followed by a documentary on The Battle of Kampar and The Malayan Emergency in 2008.

Since then, he has successfully organised historical exhibitions both locally and internationally (at the moment in London and Melbourne) and has been appointed to establish museums for notable institutions such as the Malaysian Palm Oil Association (MPOA) and the National Land and Finance Co-operative Society (NLFCS).

Beyond exhibitions, Mr Harchand continues to contribute thought-provoking historical articles to Free Malaysia Today (FMT), SikhNet, and other print and digital platforms.

The Heritage Gallery of the Church of Our Lady of Lourdes in Ipoh was established in 2010 by the then-parish priest, Fr Anthony Bernard Gnanapragasam Paul, who is now the Bishop of Malacca Johore, commonly known as Bishop Bernard Paul. The gallery was officially opened in 2011 to preserve artefacts that were once destined for disposal. It showcases a diverse array of items, including liturgical vessels, missals, Bibles, documents, host-making machines, organs, and photographs that chronicle the parish’s 120-year history. Curator Alexandar Anthony Dars, along with dedicated volunteers, works to ensure these treasures are preserved through research, conservation, and digitalisation. More than just a museum, the gallery protects the living memory and enduring faith of the community.

We were blessed to welcome pilgrims from the Church of Christ The Light, Kepong and the Church of Divine Mercy, Sg. Ara to our Heritage Gallery on Saturday, 12 July 2025.

Their journey began at the Chapel of Annai Vellanganny in Jelapang, one of the Pilgrim Churches for the Jubilee Year of Hope 2025. After visiting us, they continued on to the Church of the Holy Name of Mary in Permatang Tinggi and the Church of the Assumption in Georgetown.

May the Lord continue to guide and bless them on their pilgrimage of faith and hope.
