The record of the activities, festivities and religious Taoist practices of this historic Hokkien institution in George Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site (2008). SHORT PROFILE OF POH HOCK SEAH
Poh Hock Seah was formed in 1890 by a council of Straits-born Chinese leaders following the dissolution of the Khian Teik Society, with the aim of safeguarding the interests, welfare, and communal organisation of the Hokkien community in Penang. Under its first Chairman, Cheah Teik Soon, Poh Hock Seah inherited not only the social and protective functions of its predecessor, but also its assets and the custodianship of traditional worship practices formerly administered by the China-born merchant leadership of the Khian Teik Society. Its principal deity, Twa Peh Kong (God of Blessing, Prosperity and Morality), is widely venerated among Hokkien merchants and the broader Chinese community in Southeast Asia. The custodianship of this deity’s worship has historically been associated with social influence, communal authority, and ritual prestige. The annual “Chneah Hoay” (flame watching / fire divination ceremony) was inherited from the Khian Teik Society and entrusted to Poh Hock Seah to continue its observance at the Hai Choo Soo (Sea Pearl Isle Temple) in Tanjong Tokong. Originally conducted as a private divination ritual within the Hokkien merchant community, it later developed into an annual focal point of communal gathering and ritual continuity. In addition, the Seah also celebrates the Birthday of Twa Peh Kong on the 23rd day of the 8th Lunar Month each year.
“Chingay”, described as a form of procession in which theatrical and symbolic representations are carried on human shoulders, is regarded as a precursor to the modern parade float. The Chingay procession, featuring decorated structures and giant triangular silk flags, is historically associated with the ritual culture of Poh Hock Seah and performed in honour of its patron deity, Twa Peh Kong.
