THE MYSTERY OF MOSES AND ELIJAH AT THE TRANSFIGURATION FINALLY EXPLAINED
Three of Jesus' closest disciples stood on a high mountain.
Suddenly, Jesus' appearance changed before their eyes.
His face shone like the sun.
His clothes became dazzling white.
Then two mysterious figures appeared beside Him.
Not Abraham.
Not David.
Not John the Baptist.
It was Moses and Elijah.
Peter, James, and John were astonished.
But why these two men?
Why did they appear with Jesus during the Transfiguration?
The answer reveals one of the deepest mysteries of our Catholic faith.
First, Moses Represented the Law.
Moses was the great lawgiver of Israel.
Through him, God gave the Ten Commandments and the Law to His chosen people.
His presence at the Transfiguration showed that Jesus did not come to abolish the Law but to fulfill it perfectly.
Everything Moses had pointed toward was now fulfilled in Christ.
Second, Elijah Represented the Prophets.
Elijah was one of Israel's greatest prophets.
He courageously called God's people back to faithfulness and announced God's promises.
By standing beside Jesus, Elijah represented all the prophets whose words found their fulfillment in the Messiah.
The Law and the Prophets together testified that Jesus is the long-awaited Savior.
Third, They Spoke About Jesus' Coming Passion.
St. Luke tells us that Moses and Elijah were speaking with Jesus about the "exodus" He was about to accomplish in Jerusalem.
They were discussing His Passion, Death, Resurrection, and the salvation He would bring to the world.
Just as Moses led Israel out of slavery in Egypt, Jesus would lead humanity out of the slavery of sin.
Fourth, They Revealed That Jesus Is Greater Than Both.
Although Moses and Elijah were among the greatest figures of the Old Testament, they stood beside Jesus, not as His equals, but as witnesses to His glory.
Then the Father's voice declared:
"This is my beloved Son. Listen to Him."
At that moment, the disciples understood that Jesus is greater than the Law, greater than the Prophets, and the very Son of God.
Fifth, The Transfiguration Prepared the Disciples for the Cross.
Not long after the Transfiguration, Jesus would suffer His Passion.
By revealing His divine glory beforehand, He strengthened Peter, James, and John so that, when they later saw Him crucified, they would remember that the One suffering on the Cross was truly the glorious Son of God.
Finally, Moses and Elijah appeared at the Transfiguration because they represented the Law and the Prophets, both of which pointed to Jesus Christ. Their presence proclaimed that everything God had promised throughout the Old Testament was fulfilled in Him. The Transfiguration was not only a revelation of Christ's divine glory but also a preparation for His saving Passion.
In simple words, why did Moses and Elijah appear with Jesus?
Because Moses represented the Law.
Elijah represented the Prophets.
Together they testified that Jesus is the fulfillment of God's entire plan of salvation.
The Father's command remains the same for us today:
"Listen to Him."
