The Catholic faith in Dalat began in 1885 when Fr. Bernard Mulder set up the first mission in Sungai K*t among the predominantly Melanau residents. Bernard in remembrance of him. The first wooden church was built in 1927 by the river bank of Sungai Oya. This was replaced by a concrete Church in 1967 during the time of Fr. Gerard Jansen. Because of its beautiful location near the river, the church

has been fondly called 'Church By The River'. from 1976 to 1988, due to shortage of priests, Dalat has no resident priest but was looked after from Mukah. From 1988 until 2011, the Redemptorist priests were invited to look after the Dalat parish. The presence and hard work of the Redemptoris priests brought about an increase in the converts, extension of Church in 1994 to a capacity of 1600, building of a multi-purpose hall, chapel, parish bus and the Relax Corner where youth are encouraged to come and learned entrepreneurship skills like selling drinks and snacks.
