The 1st Month: MUHARRAM

Muharram is one of the most important months in the Islamic calendar, commencing the start of a new year. Prophet Muhammad ﷺ referred to it as ‘the Sacred Month of Allah’.

The highly blessed month of Muharram is one of the four sacred months outlined by Allah ﷻ for a particular significance: warfare is absolutely forbidden - ‘Muharram’ literally translates to ‘forbidden’.

The Day of Ashura also occurred in the month of Muharram. It marks the day when the Prophet Musa (Moses) (AS) and the Israelites were saved by Allah ﷻ from the Pharaoh by splitting the Red Sea, which they passed through.

The other significant event which occurred on the Day of Ashura was when Prophet Nuh (Noah) (AS) finally left the Ark.

The practice of fasting on Ashura was known even before the rise of Islam. When the Prophet ﷺ arrived in Madinah at the time of migration, the Jews were observing the fast on 'Ashura'.

They said: "This is the day when Moses became victorious over Pharaoh." On that, the Prophet ﷺ said to his companions (R.A.):

"You (Muslims) have more right to celebrate Moses' victory than they have, so observe the fast on this day." [Sahih Bukhari: 4680]

When different Companions (R.A.) told Prophet ﷺ that fasting on the Day of Ashura is glorified among Jews and Christians, then Prophet ﷺ encouraged them by saying: “If I live until next year, I will fast the ninth day (of Muharram) too.” (Ibn Majah: 1736)

What is the importance of Zakatul Fitr?

Zakaatul-Fitr is a purification for the fasting person and a means to please the poor.

According to Ibn Abbas, Allah ﷻ prescribed the obligation of Zakaatul-Fitr after the completion of fasting in the blessed month of Ramadhan to purify the fasting person from idle and foul speeches he did whilst fasting, a means to please the poor, and a tool to revive the spirit of cooperation, solidarity and compassion within the Muslim community.

“Take [O, Muhammad] from their wealth a charity by which you purify them and cause them increase…” [Quran 9:103]

Zakaatul-Fitr is an individual obligation upon every Muslim who can afford it. It was ordained along with fasting, in the second year after Hijrah (Emigration).

Ramadhan diet?

Read this 👇🏻

Ramadhan is not about dieting or losing weight, but we should be mindful of what we intake during Suhoor & Iftar.

Based on research, we should take long-lasting carbs for Suhoor alongside protein and fat, and this will keep us satisfied longer.

We should also avoid too many salty foods, processed sugar or anything that hastens dehydration. If you want to determine whether you are hydrated enough, check the colour of your urine, it should be clear.

For Iftar, on the other hand, it must be nutrient-dense composed of vitamins, minerals, carbs etc. because it can replenish our body and provide it with enough nutrients to handle the next day’s fast. It is highly suggested that we take dates, vegetables, protein, and healthy carbs. Use fruits as sweet treats instead of processed sugars.

Many Muslims around the world, instead of losing weight during Ramadhan, gain weight due to overeating during Iftar & Suhoor, eating too much fats, oily foods and other unhealthy food.

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ used to eat dates for breaking his fast. It is considered to be part of a "blessed prophetic diet" and consumed in many dishes year-round and especially during Ramadhan.

We should be careful with what we eat. The important thing is that we can practice the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ and we do not violate the law of Allah ﷻ by taking care of ourselves.

History of Taraweeh 🌹

Read this 👇🏻

It is always Sunnah to pray voluntarily during the evening, but during Ramadhan, this is referred to as Taraweeh prayers. Community Masajid will typically offer them right after Isha prayer. You can pray Taraweeh at home or in the Masjid.

During the time the Prophet ﷺ was alive, he came out one night to pray Taraweeh and few people joined. This continued for the next two nights and more people joined him but on the fourth night he stayed at home. He did it purposely as a mercy to the people because he knew the people would take it as obligatory if he kept doing it. Obligatory prayers are more important than Taraweeh.

“It was narrated from ‘Aishah (RA) that: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed in the masjid one night, and some people followed his prayer. Then he prayed the following night and more people came. Then they gathered on the third or fourth night and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not come out to them. When morning came he said: “I saw what you did, and nothing prevented me from coming out to you but the fact that I feared that this would be made obligatory for you,” and that was in Ramadhan.” [Sunan an-Nasa’i]

The 9th Month: RAMADHAN

Ramadhan is the holy month of fasting. It begins and ends with the appearance of the crescent moon.

It is considered one of the holiest months for Muslims and is marked by a period of fasting, considered one of the Five Pillars of Islam.

The Qu'ran, was first revealed to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ during the month of Ramadhan.

Extra emphasis is therefore placed on reciting the Qu'ran at this time.
Muslims are also encouraged to give to charity, strengthen their relationship with Allah, and show kindness and patience. Some believers also perform an additional night prayer, called Taraweeh, which only takes place during Ramadhan.

Ramadhan is a month of fasting and abstaining from things considered to be impure for the mind and body. Those partaking in Ramadhan abstain from food, drink and impure thoughts between the hours of sunrise (Fajr) and sunset, allowing them instead to focus on prayer and connecting with Allah (SWT).

The act of fasting allows the individual to understand the pain and suffering of millions around the world who live their lives in poverty and famine, leaving the participant feeling more grounded and grateful for all that Allah ﷻ has given him.

He is the Sahabah who was given the responsibility of calling the Adhan.
Answer: Bilal Ibn Rabah (RA). Did you get it right?

After the Hijrah of the Messenger ﷺ and the Sahaba to Madinah and their settling there, the Messenger ﷺ instituted the “Call to Prayer”. So who became the Muadheen five times a day? Who would call across distant lands that “Allah is the Greatest” and “There is no God but Allah?”

It was Bilal, who shouted 13 years before while the torture was destroying him. He was chosen by the Messenger ﷺ that day to be the first Muadheen in Islam. With his melodious soul-stirring voice, he filled the hearts with faith and the ears with awe when he called the adhan.
