Church of Divine Mercy Sg Ara

Church of Divine Mercy Sg Ara CDM is the latest church on the Diocese of Penang after a lapse of 44 years. CDM sits on a piece of 3848 sq. meter land donated by the late Mr. HR Watts in 1989.

2002: Bishop Emeritus Antony wrote to Msgr. Stephen Liew to look into realisation of the project.

2004: Name of the Church (DIVINE MERCY) chosen through a survey of parishioners.

2005: Church of Divine Mercy was officially launched at the Cathedral of the Holy Spirit by Fr. Francis Anthony (Parish Priest) and Fr. Henry Rajoo (Asst Parish Priest)

2007: Ground breaking ceremony on 28 October by Bishop Emeritus Antony Selvanayagam.

2009: 15 March - 1st Mass celebrated (incomplete building) by Bishop Emeritus Antony, Fr. Francis Anthony and Fr. Henry and together with the topping up ceremony of the last roof tile of the church. With a seating capacity for 918 persons and the cost of build of RM6.8 million, she was officially opened by Bishop Anthony Selvanayagam on the 29th September 2010. Exactly 3 years later, on 29th September 2013, CDM is upgraded to full Parish status and with that, the installation of the first parish priest, Fr. Martin Arlando by Bishop Sebastian Francis
