He began reading Laozi and Zhuangzi at age 13, and at age 14 he studied Western works by Plato, Descartes, and Nietzsche. At age 15 he began studying Buddhism and practicing it. After gaining insights through meditation, at age 17 he studied Confucianism under Tang Junyi and Mou Zongsan, both Neo-Confucianists. At age 22 he accepted Christ's salvation and was born again. He spent two years studying medieval theology and two years studying biblical theology and systematic theology, writing "Convergence and Transformation" to explain Christianity to Neo-Confucian thinkers. During the same period, he went to the University of Hawaii to study the I Ching and Confucianism under Cheng Zhongying, a senior disciple of Fang Dongmei. Afterward, he traveled around preaching the gospel and discussing Christian theology and apologetics in the context of China. Academically, he wrote more than 100 papers, studying Chinese and Western philosophy and Chinese theology.
He graduated with a First Class Honours Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy from the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and subsequently earned a Master of Philosophy degree from the Chinese University of Hong Kong, a Ph.D. in Philosophy from the University of Hawaii (specializing in Chinese Confucianism and the I Ching), a Special Postgraduate degree from the China Theological Seminary, and an Honorary Visiting Scholar at Regent Theological Seminary in Canada. He served as a senior lecturer at a Hong Kong Baptist College for ten years. In 1994, he founded the Centre for Cultural Renewal Studies and the academic journal *Cultural China* in Canada. He is currently a visiting professor at Trinity Western University, Director of the Religious and Christian Studies Program at the School of Humanities and Religion, Peking University, a visiting professor at Zhejiang University, and a doctoral supervisor at Sun Yat-sen University. He was also a distinguished overseas visiting professor at the Sichuan University 985 Project Research Base for Religion and Society.
Dr. Liang has published 34 books in China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan, including "Confucianism, Taoism, I Ching and Christian Faith", "Convergence and Transformation", "When Christ Meets Confucianism, Taoism and Buddhism", "Reconstruction of Chinese Philosophy", "Chinese Philosophy of Realm and Theology", "Wandering in the Realm of Wisdom", and "The Philosopher's Chivalrous Spirit".
