The Seventeenth of Tammuz (Shivah Asar B’Tammuz) is a Jewish fast day that marks the beginning of the Three Weeks, a period of mourning over the destruction of Jerusalem and the Holy Temple.

According to the Sages, five tragic events occurred on this day:

* Moses broke the Tablets after the sin of the Golden Calf.
* The daily Temple offering (Korban Tamid) ceased.
* The walls of Jerusalem were breached before the destruction of the Second Temple.
* Apostomus burned a Torah scroll.
* An idol was placed in the Holy Temple.

This day calls on us to pause, reflect, strengthen our faith, increase love and unity among the Jewish people, and pray for the rebuilding of the Holy Temple and the coming of redemption.

י״ז בתמוז הוא יום צום המציין את תחילתה של תקופת בין המצרים – שלושת השבועות של אבלות על חורבן ירושלים ובית המקדש.

על פי חז״ל, חמישה אירועים קשים אירעו ביום זה:

* משה רבנו שבר את לוחות הברית לאחר חטא העגל.
* פסק קרבן התמיד בבית המקדש.
* הובקעה חומת ירושלים לפני חורבן בית המקדש השני.
* אפוסטמוס שרף את ספר התורה.
* הועמד צלם בהיכל.
