Today the Church remembers Joseph of Nazareth, the one entrusted with the care of Mary and the child Jesus.
The Gospels tell us little about Joseph’s words, but much about his actions. Faced with uncertainty and fear, Joseph chooses compassion, obedience and trust in God’s guidance. His faith is lived quietly, through care, protection and faithfulness to what God has asked of him.
Bible reading: Matthew 1:19–20
‘Her husband Joseph, being a righteous man and unwilling to expose her to public disgrace, planned to dismiss her quietly. But just when he had resolved to do this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife, for the child conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.”’
Prayer
Faithful God,
you call us to trust you even when the way is unclear.
Give us the courage of Joseph,
to act with compassion, humility and obedience.
Help us to listen for your guidance
and to serve your purposes quietly and faithfully,
placing our lives in your care.
Amen.
