Being Alive, A Miracle

In troubled times, it can be easy to lose sight of the sheer wonder of being here.

This Sunday, guest speaker Frank Thoms invites us to reflect on the extraordinary miracle of being alive, drawing on the wisdom of Mary Oliver and Alan Lightman.

Frank will share stories from his 40-year teaching career in the United States, England, and the Soviet Union—and reflect on the moments of wonder that unfolded in his classrooms.

UUFSMA will honor World Water Day by exploring a simple idea with big implications: safe water isn’t just a technical challenge — it’s a community challenge with critical personal impact.

This week, we are fortunate to welcome back a familiar face and an inspiring speaker, Dylan Terrell, Founder and Executive Director of . Through stories from rural communities, Dylan will explore how residents have responded not as passive recipients of aid, but as partners and decision-makers.

Right now—in the U.S. and elsewhere—history is not just something we study. It has become a source of contention. Who gets to tell the story? What gets left out? And what
happens when the past is edited to fit the current political agenda? This Sunday, our Minister, the Rev. Tom Rosiello, will explore why we need the whole story—the proud chapters and the painful ones—and what it means, as people of faith, to resist the urge to look away.

This Sunday, we are so fortunate to be joined by two incredible women from our own community, Paola Turandot and Carla Espinoza. They’ll be sharing a heartfelt reflection on the courage of women throughout history and the collective power of those who raised their voices to shape the rights we hold today. It’s a beautiful opportunity to honor their insight and the journey we’ve all shared

Unitarian Universalists have nurtured the spiritual lives of children and youth for more than 200 years.  On Sunday, February 22, 2026, the UUFSMA will celebrate this rich tradition—honoring its origins, its evolution, and why it still matters to families today. The service will also offer a window into our own religious education program, Young Explorers, which serves children and youth ages 5 to 15. In Young Explorers, kids ask big questions, build friendships, explore our UU values, and learn what it means to be part of a caring community.

Many of us are living through days that feel deeply unsettling. For some, these are shocking, even shameful, times – times we never thought we’d see. It is no wonder so many of us are asking, “What can I do?” In this service, Rev. Rosiello will share his reflections on what “the something” might be and how we can respond to real-world challenges while also caring for ourselves and our neighbors. Our children—our hope for the future—will be there to begin our service, and we will share a bilingual version of The Starfish Story, adapted from The Star Thrower by Loren Eiseley.
