Please pray for those affected by the tragedy in NEPAL. The friends there that we support sent us a report today. They are safe, but some of those they work with have not responded to messages. Pray that they are alive and safe, just out of touch. They confirmed that an iceberg measuring almost 1 km (.6 mi) from the area near the China/Tibet border fell as distance of almost 1 km and blocked the main river. An earthquake of 4.4 was measured that felt like a 5.2 earthquake. Because there was no rain at the time, no one down river knew what had happened and it caught everyone by surprise. There are/were 11 dams in the area that added to the damage of the flood when the waters finally broke through the iceberg. Large pieces of ice came down in the flood waters. 1000s of people have been evacuated, 70 bridges destroyed, including the largest bridge that goes between China and Tibet in that area. This area, near Mt Everest and other famous peaks, is a high turist area and hundreds of foreigners are also currently missing. Between the 2 countries, more than a 1000 people are missing and 2-300 known dead. The numbers are expected to climb as rescue efforts continue.
Pray for our friends and their co-workers as they prepare to respond in ways that they can. Pray for the rescuers, the families of the disappeared and dead, those still trapped or injured, the repairs that will need to happen and may have other long term effects on the population (loss of electricity and turism, for example). The flood waters have gone well over 50 km and India is even on alert in it's northern states as the water continues to flow that direction at higher than normal rates.
