We love our original missionary Amelia Rattan! Amelia began her ministry with Mexico Outreach along with her husband Horace back in the early 1960s. Over the many years she partnered more than 200,000 people with ministry opportunities in Mexicali and Ensenada. We are grateful to her and the other founders for giving us a great heritage in ministry.
As some of you know, Amelia has had some significant health issues beginning a year ago and there was some doubt if she would even survive November 2016 since, she had to be intubated twice.
Since her situation has become more stable I wanted to give you an update you on her condition. The bad news is she has lost a great deal of weight and she is suffering from the effects of Alzheimer’s disease and so it is hard for her to have a conversation. She is not very aware of reality or the present. The good news. She overall is very happy and always glad to have visitors. She is well cared at convalescent home that has a friendly staff. In recent years, she has been quite sad and wanted to go to heaven to be with other loved ones. She still recognizes some people. When Eduardo Irizarry and I (Eddy Calderwood) she recognized us and was very chatty. When I let her know that we were on our way to Mexicali to prepare for the Thanksgiving Outreach she said she would love to come help. She still has her heart to serve! She also has her great since of humor and likes to tease.
While I am sad to see what she has lost, I am glad that she continues to gain joy and loves the Lord.

Mantenga por favor a Amelia rezo.

Dear friends please be in prayer for our beloved missionary/founder Amelia Rattan and her family. Over the last couple of years, her family has done a terrific job at taking care of her as she has lost the ability to take care of herself.

On Saturday afternoon, she became unresponsive and was taken the El Centro Regional Medical Center. Once there, she was placed on a ventilator and admitted to ICU. As of last night she has shown some signs of improvement but is still in very critical condition. Please pray for her improvement, pray for Denise and James as they make important decisions, and for the wisdom of the medical team as conduct their treatment and advise the family on the best next steps.

Some backstory: Amelia began to work with Azusa Pacific College back in the 1960’s after she met entrepreneurial professor Carolyn Koons. Amelia then began organizing and coordinating all of the ministry sites in Mexicali. As the ministry grew so did Amelia’s job. At the peek she was partnering hundreds of youth pastors to hundreds of host churches that facilitated thousands and thousands of youth to serve the Mexicali community in partnership with the local churches.

For many of us she has become an important family member. For yours truly (Eddy Calderwood) and several others she simply known as my mom. We love her. We know she is one of the Lord's favorites.

2015 Ensenada Mexico Outreach Kids Camp The day started early for the volunteers in charge of cleaning up the park at 6:20 a.m. and they did a great job despite the cold and the morning breeze.
The kids started to arrive at the park at 6:40, and five minutes later was time to register. Everyone was looking very excited, expecting a wonderful day. The boys were playing soccer and running everywhere waiting for the pool time, and the girls were looking for a team’s name.
Then, everyone put their camp shirts on and teachers proceeded to meet the kids on their teams and introduce themselves so they could begin the activities and make some crafts. You could also see that some of the leaders where young but enthusiastic.
Before the authorities were presented, some girls were singing “Queremos ver.” When they were ready to start their activities, the leaders explained some points and gave some indications. Then we prayed and you could see the kids bowing their heads.
At 8:30 a.m. they were ready to take their breakfast, which was scrambled eggs and beans. Most of the kids were very happy because they really liked it.
Every team got an hour on each activity so everyone could enjoy the activities planned for them.
The girls were making beautiful crafts, coloring, decorating a little handmade book with stickers, images, and verses while listening to a beautiful lesson about God’s love.
The lesson was about God’s love and his provision. The teachers were doing a really great job because kids were paying attention and participating. They made the lesson very interesting by using examples easy to understand for the kids, and they gave the kids some advices.
The leader made some questions to the girls, and they answer very accretive. After that, the girls from 7 to 9 were doing some crafts, and from 10 to 11 were learning about God’s everlasting love while the boys from 10 to 11 were playing in the pool. Each team learned how to work as a team in an obstacles race. It was awesome to see them working as a team, they were quite happy.
After all that fun, it was time for lunch which was teriyaki chicken and rice followed by some free time to rest and let the food settle.
During the sports activity, some of the teams played volleyball and basketball while their leaders cheered them. The team of “Los Xolos” was playing a Mexican game.
While they were waiting for dinner, the kids were playing, dancing, and creating songs about how cool their team was.
For dinner the volunteers in charge of the food served some delicious hot dogs.
At the end, four volunteers dressed up as clowns to explain in a fun but simple way how God can make us clean. After the kids answered a couple of questions, 10 of them accepted Jesus as their savior.
We asked one of the leaders about their opinion on this camp: “They have fantastic activities. I like the fact that they put God at the beginning and the end of this day and that we God the place He deserves. The organization was good and camp was very fun. The girls were so nice and good listeners.”
When it was time to go, the kids were tired but extremely happy that they got to spend an entire day having day while learning about God and how amazing His love is.
