Man of Sin - Mystery of Iniquity
William Sowders. May 4th, 1947.
Then “That man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition; who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God.” (2TH 2:3-4) Follow on in the context; don’t take the text out of the context to try to find out what he meant. You can’t understand the meaning of the text if you try to find the text and not the context.
Therefore as I said, Paul was warning the, showing them how Jesus Christ could not scorn then. For he will not come until there is a falling away of the church of the firstborn.
Then he refers to the mystery of iniquity. “For the mystery of iniquity doth already work;” (2TH 2:7) What is the mystery of iniquity? Sects, division of the people of God, great iniquity among the people. God hates the man that sows discord among the people. Could you say it was anything but discord out there? It is nothing but discord, and the seed of discord produces discord.
What the Bible says is not to them out there- it is only to the church of the firstborn and its lineage through the ages.
“For the mystery of iniquity doth already work.” (2TH 2:7) Paul was talking about iniquity – and he understood what the mystery of iniquity was. Speaking about that I will refer to another scripture; Paul was talking to Timothy: “Who concerning the truth have erred, saying that the resurrection is past already; and overthrow the faith of some . . . Let everyone that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity.” (2TI 2:18-19) What did he mean by iniquity? Was he talking about stealing, cursing, lying, drinking? Did he have something like that in his mind? The iniquity he was talking about was preaching perverse doctrines, causing discord among the brethren, overthrowing the faith of some. For that reason he said, “Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.” (2TI 2:15) “But in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and of silver, but also of wood and of earth; and some to honour, and some to dishonour. (2TI 2:20) He was referring to the church of God that came out of the upper room on the day of Pentecost. “In a great house,” that is the house he was referring to, not all the sects.
You will never get the things of the Bible unless you learn how to apply the scriptures. It is not applied to this and that, that is scattered out there. It is applied to one church. Therefore, “In a great house there are not only vessels of gold and of silver, but also of wood and of earth… If a man therefore purge himself from these, [from what? this iniquity] He shall be a vessel unto honor, sanctified and meet for the master’s use, and prepared unto every good work.” (2TI 2:20-21) That iniquity was working in Paul’s day. It is a mystery. Look at the churches and the ministers still working in divisions out there. It is such a mystery; they can’t see, can’t tell where they are. Separate a part from the body - - - that part is bound to die.
“The mystery of iniquity doth already work.” (2TH 2:7) I’ll bring that out, the Lord willing. Get that now - - get the context. Paul was talking about the coming of Jesus Christ, I’m telling you it won’t come except there be a falling away of the church first. When that church falls away, there will be a man take the place of Jesus Christ, and the mystery of that man is working right now. All this separation out there the mystery of iniquity doth already work, only he who now letteth, “Not hinders but lets will let, until he be taken out of the way.” (2TH 2:7) “That man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition; who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, showing himself that he is God.” (2TH 2:3) See the context there? Without the context how can you see that? “He who hinders will hinder?” He is not talking about hindering, he is talking about letting the thing happen instead of hindering.
We can get too mechanical, become too educated and try to get these scriptures in a mechanical way; you can’t do it. God has hidden it from the wise and prudent. It is the wisdom of God.
Therefore, “Only he who now letteth will let,” (2TH 2:7) you can’t make hinder out of that you couldn’t intelligently put hinder there and make sense. “Only he who now letteth will let, until he [whom he lets work] be taken out of the way.”
