Anglican Diocese of Upper Shire has launched a new book titled “Chaplaincy Order Service Book for Schools and Hospitals”, a development expected to strengthen the provision of spiritual care in educational and health institutions across the diocese.
The launch ceremony was presided over by the Bishop of the Anglican Diocese of Upper Shire, William Joseph Mchombo, who served as the guest of honour.
Speaking during the event, Bishop Mchombo said the book was developed in response to the absence of a unified liturgy for chaplaincy ministry in schools and hospitals under the diocesan institutional chaplaincy.
He explained that chaplains had been using different approaches in delivering spiritual services, creating a need for a standardised guide that would promote consistency and effectiveness in pastoral care.
The Bishop further described the publication as an important resource that will support clergy and lay faithful in offering spiritual guidance and emotional support to students, teachers, healthcare workers, patients and guardians.
Chairperson of the Chaplaincy Committee, Reverend Canon Mtitimila, said the book is firmly grounded in scripture, church tradition and reasoning, making it a reliable tool for ministry in institutions.
Mtitimila keynoted that one of the unique features of the publication is its focus on mental health, an issue that is increasingly receiving attention in Malawi and around the world.
“Besides providing guidance for spiritual care, the book also addresses mental health issues, recognising the growing need to support people’s emotional and psychological well-being,” said Mtitimila.
The launch of the Chaplaincy Order Service Book for Schools and Hospitals marks a significant milestone for the Anglican Diocese of Upper Shire as it seeks to strengthen pastoral ministry and respond to the spiritual, emotional and social needs of people in schools and healthcare facilities.
