Long post but worthy reading ......
Today,I would like us to answer the questions above as quickly as possible to establish you in the faith so that you are not tossed to and fro carried about by every wind of doctrine.
QUESTION
1.Is repentance for non believers or believers?
ANSWER
Firstly,repentance means a change of mind ,heart and direction(It is not only the change of mind as taught by some unbalanced teachers of the word )
Repentance is complete when one changes direction also.
A man can't repent and continues in whatever he was doing.That's not true REPENTANCE
Therefore,repentance is for ALL(believers and non believer) as ALL can change their mind,heart and direction.
Some teachers say a non believer doesn't have the wherewithal to repent arguing that he has not experienced the goodness of God.They say,it is only the goodness of God that leads men to repentance.
Well,that's true but not balanced.The holyghost has a convicting ministry to non believers.When the holyghost convicts them of their sins,the end result is repentance .Don't see the convicting ministry of the Holyspirit as something negative.Conviction of the Holyspirit is showing you that you are living in sin and that you shall be judged for it(John 16:8)
Act 2:37 Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do?
Act 2:38 Then Peter said unto them, REPENT, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.
So,the context of repentance differs as the two are not the same.
TO NON BELIEVERS
Repentance is from ;
1.Dead works (works of the law)
2.Repentance from Sin
.......It brings salvation
TO BELIEVERS
Repentance is from ;
1.Dead works (Works of the law,works of the flesh)
2.Repentance from acts of sin or sinning
......REPENTANCE after salvation brings about or makes room for HOLY LIVING
2 Corinthians 7:10 KJV
For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world worketh death.
2.SHOULD A CHRISTIAN CONFESS SINS???
Yes,a Christian can confess if he has sinned.
Most "grace advocates" preach against confession of sins among believers.They say when we encourage believers to confess sins, they will be sin-conscious but rather they must confess righteousness or Jesus Christ who is our sin bearer.
Well,that's not a balanced teaching.Its just a man-made doctrine but the bible doesn't say so rather it admonishes believers to do so.
Remember,we are in a relationship with the Holyspirit.And the Holyspirit is a person .He has feelings and emotions (We can either gladden or sadden Him)
Sin grieves the Holyspirit.A believer who is living in sin(practising sin) grieves the Holyspirit(Ephes 4:30).A wise believer will confess and repent from any form of sin or addiction.That's humility!
Remember,it is not confession of sins among believers that brings about forgiveness from God.We are forgiven already in Christ Jesus (Colosians 2:13, Ephesians 4:32)
........But still we are to CONFESS sins,we don't have to pretend or cover any form of sin in our lives
The writer of Proverbs says,we shall not prosper if we cover sins.
Proverbs 28:13-17 KJV
He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: But whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy. Happy is the man that feareth alway: But he that hardeneth his heart shall fall into mischief.
TWO KINDS OF CONFESSION
Confession must always be seen in 2 lights ;
1.Confession of sin
2.Confession of Righteousness (Jesus Christ)
The believer can do both......
Confession of sin happens IF a believer sin in his walk of faith.
Remember,it is not confession that brings forgiveness of sins.Forgiveness of sin is blood-based( achieved already in Christ)
Someone said, if confession of sin doesn't bring forgiveness of sins then it is useless and irrelevant.
Well,though confession of sin doesn't bring forgiveness of sins ,it is still relevant .It helps US as believers and it is done for two reasons;
1.For conscience sake
*Only bastards and fools will not apologise for the sin they committed and pretend as if everything is fine
2.To depart from that sin
*Without confession,you will feel comfortable in that sin and make a practice of sin.And God doesn't want continuity in sin
QUESTION 3
IS THERE SUCH A THING AS SINS OF COMMISSION AND SINS OF OMISSION ?
ANSWER
YES,these are two main categories of sin.
Sins of commission are sins that are committed deliberately and intentionally.They are Sins that are remembered that you committed them as they considered "big sins".
Examples;
Adam and Eve partaking of the forbidden tree
Stealing
fornication
murder
Where as sins of omission are sins committed without fully knowing or realizing that they are wrong.These are also called "descent sins".
.......Whatsoever is not of faith is sin"(Romans 14:23)
Examples ;
Not going to church
Not praying
Not fasting when commanded
Failure to give other kinds of giving in church like honour offering ,seeds ,tithes
But the goodnews is that ALL these sins(commission and ommission) are already forgiven in Christ.But it's important to repent from them for conscience sake and strengthening your relationship with the holyghost.
Hope this blessed you
