Bishop Dr. Fanuel Magangani Visits St. Ambrose Parish in Karonga Boma

Karonga, June 7th: As part of his ongoing pastoral visit to the Karonga Archdeaconry, Bishop Dr. Fanuel Magangani visited St. Ambrose Parish today. This parish, one of the oldest congregations in the Diocese, was established by the migration of two groups of people: one from the Songea region of Tanzania, who initially settled in Kasowa before moving to the Boma area, and another from Likoma and other parts of Malawi like Mrs. Mwambetamia Nee Rubadiri and Mr. Matenje as prominent figures in the formation of the parish.

During today's service, the parish celebrated a significant milestone with the confirmation of 78 new members, who have joined the congregation and are eager to participate in the Mission of God. The event was marked by a spirit of joy and community, highlighting the rich cultural tapestry of the parish formed by its diverse members. Music is one for the reach blessing in Karonga Archdeaconry just like many other churches in the Diocese.

Visit of the Bishop to St. Paul's Parish, Kapolo

On June 5th and 6th, the Parish of St. Paul’s in Kapolo welcomed a significant visit from the Bishop, Rt. Rev. Dr. Fanuel Magangani during which three churches were toured.

On June 5th, the Bishop visited St. Alban Kiwe, St. Michael's at the Malawi-Tanzania border, and St. Peter's Mwangulukulu. At St. Alban's and St. Michael's, congregations are currently worshiping at a preaching point under the shade of trees, with aspirations to construct dedicated church buildings. Encouragingly, a plot of land has already been secured for this purpose, and the community is hopeful for progress in the near future. This was also marked with the laying of a foundation stone for the priest house.

The following day, June 6th, St. Paul's Parish held a special service featuring a ceremonial switching on of electrical power, a generous donation from Hon. Mwambande, the Member of Parliament for the Karonga Songwe Constituency.

The service also included the commissioning of two new Sub Deacons: Babu Steven Skazwe and Blessings Aubia Mwambingu. In addition, 31 new members were confirmed into the Church of God, echoing the sentiment of Isaiah: "Here I am, Lord; send me Lord."

We ask the community to keep the parish priest, Fr. Holder Mnthali, and the congregation of St. Paul’s Church in their thoughts and prayers as they continue their journey of faith and growth.

The congregation at St. Monica’s Kabwafu gathered in celebration today for the induction of The Rev. Fr. Chack Lovemore Kamanga as Priest in Charge. The event was marked by a special confirmation service where 55 members were welcomed into the Church of God.

The service was a moment of joy and gratitude, as members of the congregation came together to support Fr. Kamanga in his new role. The church community expressed their prayers for the newly confirmed members, encouraging them to grow spiritually and fully engage in the mission of God.

In light of the parish's needs, the congregation is called upon to participate actively in the mission of God, focusing on essential developments within the community. Plans are underway to build a parish church and a priest's house to facilitate Fr. Kamanga's ministry effectively.

The primary occupation of the local community is to***co farming, with maize being cultivated mainly for subsistence. As the church looks to the future, the support and prayers of all members will be crucial in addressing the challenges ahead and fulfilling the mission of God in this parish.

April 26th was another successful day, with 42 members confirmed at St. George’s Ntchenachena in the Rumphi District. The Honorable Minister of Transport and Public Works, who is also the Member of Parliament for the constituency, was in attendance. This is one of our smaller parishes, still in its infancy, and we pray for its continued growth.

The church building requires some extension.

One commendable aspect of this congregation is their commitment to the environment. They have established a woodlot with pine trees planted on their property. We look forward to seeing them thrive. In the background is an Early Childhood Development Centre.

This Holy Week has been exceptionally busy, alongside various activities on the Island. In addition to confirmations at St. Peter’s Cathedral and St. Mark’s Church, we celebrated the ordination of four Deacons:

- The Rev. Esau Andrew Njiramu, commissioned to serve at St. George’s, Nkhata Bay.
- The Rev. Amos Isaac Kholoma, commissioned to serve at St. Ambrose, Karonga.
- The Rev. Chimwemwe Mkambula, commissioned to serve at St. Dunstan, Mzimba.
- The Rev. Emmanuel Mpangala, commissioned to serve at St. Peter’s Cathedral.

All of these individuals are transitional deacons, and if all goes well, they will be ordained as priests in the Church of God. Let us keep them in our prayers as they embark on their journey into Holy Orders.

We celebrate the confirmation of 40 members into the One Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church within the Anglican Communion. The original church building, constructed in 1898, was the first on Likoma Island and preceded the construction of St. Peter’s Cathedral.

The new church building stands as a testament to the resilience of the local community, bolstered by generous contributions from the sons of St. Mark’s in Blantyre thanks to families of Mr. Chimwaza, Mr Ndilowe and Mr. Chiwaula. Notably, the roof was donated by the Hamilton family from the Diocese of Fort Worth in the USA.

We are hopeful that by next year, the new church building will be completed and ready for dedication. There are still some tasks to be finished, including painting, exterior pointing, electrical and completing the flooring. Any assistance towards these efforts would be greatly appreciated.

St. Peter Cathedral on Likoma Island serves as the mother church of the Anglican Church in the Diocese of Southern Highlands, Southwest Tanganyika, and Ruvuma in Tanzania, as well as the Diocese of Nyasa in Mozambique, the four dioceses in Malawi, and the Diocese of Eastern Zambia. By 1891, these jurisdictions were all part of the Diocese of Likoma. We are looking forward for a repeat of the history.

Today, we celebrated a confirmation service during which 205 members were confirmed into the One Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church. They also received their first communion in their lifetime. We thank God for each of them and pray that they grow in wisdom and in favor with God.

Today in history, the clergy on the Islands of Likoma and Chizumulu were blessed with the renewal of their vows, as well as the consecration of oils for baptism and the anointing of the sick. This event comes at a significant time, as the parishes of Likoma and Chizumulu are anticipated to become the Diocese of Likoma, pending approval from the episcopal synod for the proposal that was endorsed by the provincial synod.
