The Bishop of the Anglican Diocese of Lake Malawi, the Rt. Rev. Daniel Kalonga, has expressed concern over the growing tendency of some traders who purchase farm produce from local farmers at prices far below the government set minimum farm gate price.
Bishop Kalonga made these remarks during a diaconate ordination ceremony held at St. Mary's Anglican Church, Buzi Parish in Ntchisi on Saturday, May 23, 2026. He called upon the government, law enforcement agencies, and local leaders to work collaboratively with the Church in protecting farmers from exploitation by unscrupulous traders who continue to offer unfairly low prices for agricultural produce.
The Bishop further advised farmers against selling all their produce prematurely, warning that such practices could lead to food shortages at a later stage and negatively affect household food security and the nation at large.
Speaking at the same event, the Guest of Honour, Hon. Anold Kadzanja, MP for Ntchisi North Constituency, echoed the Bishop’s concerns, noting that such malpractice places a significant burden on Malawians, particularly farmers who are already grappling with the high cost of agricultural inputs.
The ceremony also marked an important milestone in the life of the Diocese, as seven ordinands were ordained into the diaconate. The newly ordained deacons are:
Rev. Deacon Trevor Den Desilva
Rev. Deacon Frazer Mzungu
Rev. Deacon Jonasi Chisonga
Rev. Deacon Flavious Peter Damba
Rev. Deacon Alex Luka Yapola
Rev. Deacon James Jezikamale
Rev. Deacon Stencam Sinkaika
The ordination signifies the Diocese’s continued commitment to strengthening its ministry and expanding its service to the people of God.
