Ministry of Health and Sanitation, in partnership with UNICEF and the Government of Japan, has launched a one-year US$746,000 Integrated Emergency Health, Nutrition and WASH Response Project.

The project aims to provide essential health services in the vulnerable districts of Salima and Thyolo, which have been affected by child malnutrition, cholera outbreaks, and climate-related disasters.

Speaking during the launch, Principal Secretary for Administration Benston Chisamalile welcomed the initiative, saying the partnership will help improve access to critical health services for Malawi’s most vulnerable children and communities.

In his remarks, Japanese Ambassador to Malawi Naito Yasushi reaffirmed his government’s commitment to strengthening health systems and promoting innovations through partnerships the Malawi Government.

Competition and Fair Trading Commission (CFTC) has raised alarm over the continued sale of expired and potentially unsafe goods across Malawi, urging consumers to be more vigilant when purchasing everyday products.

The warning comes after recent market inspections revealed a worrying number of expired items being sold in shops across several districts.

According to CFTC spokesperson Innocent Helema, the Commission conducted extensive inspections in Blantyre, Lilongwe, Mulanje, Salima, Nkhotakota and Chikwawa, where officers discovered a total of 891 expired products.

Helema said the findings reflect serious negligence by some traders and pose a direct threat to consumer safety if not urgently addressed.

He further said the inspection exercise uncovered a wide range of expired goods, including 101 dairy products, 112 packs of biscuits, 83 packs of noodles and cereals, 178 packets of chewing gum and mints, 172 chocolates and sweets, and 59 snacks and crisps.

In addition, 49 beverages, 38 sauce products and spices and 28 personal care and household items were also found to be past their expiry dates.

The exercise follows a similar operation conducted last week in Mangochi, Machinga, Zomba, Mzimba, Mzuzu and Kasungu, where 14 shops were found selling 649 expired and uncertified products.

Gift of the Givers Foundation has stepped in to support Malawians on voluntary repatriation from South Africa, providing transport assistance amid growing demand for return journeys to Malawi.

With support from the organization, 8 buses have departed South Africa for Malawi (seven from Pietermaritzburg and one from Durban) with 11 more currently being processed.

The foundation's director Sheriffa Mia says they plan to sponsor up to 50 buses in total to help ease pressure on both the Malawian and South African governments, which have been coordinating the repatriation exercise.

The organization is also providing returns with basic supplies that include hygiene packs, snack packs, sandwiches, clean and safe water for drinking to sustain them along the way.

The Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA) has moved the main reception and processing centre for Malawians returning from South Africa due to xenophobic attacks, from Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre to Joyce Chitsulo Stadium in Mwanza.

According to DoDMA, the move is aimed at bringing services closer to the point of entry and improving the repatriation process. Returning citizens will now receive immigration clearance, registration, health screening and humanitarian assistance in Mwanza before travelling to their home districts.

The government has also deployed relief supplies and processing teams to Mwanza, while returnees will be provided with bus fare to reach their respective homes safely. Families are advised that all reception and processing activities will now take place in Mwanza.
