Representative from MISA Malawi, Aubrey Chikungwa, said that the media has the power to initiate change by reporting the truth and providing simple, easy-to-understand information.
Speaking on the second day of a media training workshop in Salima, he said the media faces several challenges when reporting on mining issues, including disinformation and misinformation, trust and credibility concerns, self-censorship, and a lack of specialized skills.
One of the participants, Joseph Mazizi from Capital FM, said the training was very important because it helped journalists understand Malawi’s growing mining industry. Participants learned key topics such as mining licenses, exploration, and how the sector operates—areas that many journalists previously knew little about.
He added that the knowledge gained will help journalists provide accurate and reliable information to the public. Since many people depend on the media for information, training journalists on mining issues ensures that communities are better informed about developments in the mining sector.
