Barely hours after the Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported that 22 Malawians were involved in a fatal bus accident in South Africa, the Office of the President and Cabinet (OPC) has confirmed that 18 Malawians have been identified among the deceased.

In a statement signed by Secretary to the President and Cabinet, Justin Saidi, the OPC said President Peter Mutharika and First Lady Gertrude Mutharika are “deeply saddened by the tragic accident” and have conveyed their heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families.

Earlier, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that 22 Malawians were on board the ill-fated bus, with 14 confirmed alive and eight reported missing.

The Ministry also stated that 43 people had died in the crash, though it could not immediately confirm whether any of the deceased were Malawian, noting that South African authorities were conducting forensic identification of the victims.

Meanwhile, President Mutharika has reaffirmed his government’s commitment to supporting the bereaved families with all necessary funeral arrangements and extended wishes for a swift recovery to those injured.

Ethel, was born with clubfoot, a condition where her feet curved inward, making it difficult for her to walk, play, or live like other children her age.

For years, she endured the physical and emotional pain of the condition, which followed her into her teenage years.

Her story took a hopeful turn when she crossed paths with Rev. Blessing, a local pastor who had just attended a CURE Malawi training session titled "The Theology of Disability."

The training focused on God’s heart for people with disabilities, challenging harmful beliefs that often associate disability with shame or curse.

When Rev. Blessing met Ethel, he shared what he had learned, that her condition was not a curse, and that children like her are loved by God and filled with purpose.

More than just encouraging words, he informed her that her condition could be corrected through free surgery at Beit CURE International Hospital, Malawi.. Taking it upon himself, the pastor personally accompanied her to the hospital.

Three years later, Ethel’s transformation is undeniable. She now walks with confidence on straightened feet, attends school, helps her family, and lives with a new sense of possibility.
