The Preliminary Definition of Magic (from the provided page of the Lemegeton / Lesser Key of Solomon, Mathers-Crowley edition) sets a lofty, philosophical tone for the entire work
Magic is framed as -
“the Highest, most Absolute, and most Divine Knowledge of Natural Philosophy, advanced in its works and wonderful operations by a right understanding of the inward and occult virtue of things; so that true Agents being applied to proper Patients, strange and admirable effects will thereby be produced.”
Magicians are “profound and diligent searchers into Nature.”
The text cites classical authorities (Origen, Apollonius of Tyana, Philo) to argue that true (Natural) Magic is not a vulgar miracle or inherently evil, but a legitimate, exalted pursuit once studied even by kings and the greatest Persian sages. It explicitly distinguishes Natural Magic.
The Magical Circle & Ritual Framework (Second Image)
This yellow/gold diagram is the classic Magical Circle of King Solomon (often reproduced in color in these editions). It is the central protective and authoritative ritual space.
Ritual role: The circle is the operator’s fortress and seat of power. The evoked spirit is typically constrained to appear in the Triangle of Art placed outside the circle in the appropriate quarter. The whole setup (circle + triangle + seals + divine names + consecrated tools) creates a controlled interface between the magician and the spirit world.
Seals in the Books
The Key of Solomon tradition is famous for its seals (characters/sigils):
Lesser Key (Goetia): Each of the 72 spirits has its own unique seal/sigil. These are drawn on parchment or metal and used to contact, focus, or bind the specific spirit. There is also the Secret Seal of Solomon, the Hexagram of Solomon, the Pentagram of Solomon, and the Magic Ring/Disc.
New School / Contemporary Approaches (Modern Demonolatry, Relational Goetia, Psychological & Chaos currents)
Many contemporary practitioners have shifted toward open exploration, relationship, and partnership.
Instead of pure command-and-control, the emphasis is on mutual respect, offerings, ongoing dialogue, and building rapport or pacts with the spirits as ancient daemonic intelligences or teachers.
“Evocation” becomes more like communion or collaborative work. Some interpret the spirits psychologically (as shadow aspects, archetypes, or parts of the self — Jungian active imagination territory), while others treat them as independent entities open to respectful interaction. The classic seals, circle, and triangle are still often used for structure, focus, and safety, but the power dynamic is reinterpreted as co-creative rather than purely dominating. “Daemon” is frequently reclaimed in its older, more neutral or positive sense (inner genius, guide).
Safety is sought through relationship, personal sovereignty, clear boundaries, and sometimes psychological integration work rather than solely through fortification and threat. This approach often blends with Left-Hand Path, Qliphothic, or results-oriented chaos magic currents.
The preliminary definition’s language of “inward and occult virtue of things” and “divine knowledge of Natural Philosophy” is sometimes cited by modern practitioners as support for a less adversarial, more exploratory framing.
Spectrum & Hybrids
Most serious modern Goetic workers exist on a spectrum. Many use the traditional forms (circle, triangle, seals, conjurations) for their proven structure and psychological/spiritual potency while cultivating a more respectful or relational stance.
The old-school command model remains powerful for certain results-oriented or highly structured work; the new-school relational/exploratory model suits long-term spirit contact, self-knowledge, and gnosis-oriented practice.
Both can claim roots in the Solomonic tradition — one emphasizing mastery and authority, the other emphasizing dialogue with the hidden virtues of nature and the daemonic.
