Title: “The Miracle of the Messiah’s Birth”
Text: Matthew 1:18–25
---
INTRODUCTION
Matthew does not begin his Gospel with shepherds, angels, or wise men. Instead, he begins with a problem—a young woman found to be with child before marriage. To human eyes, this looks like shame, scandal, and broken dreams. But to heaven, it is the unfolding of God’s greatest plan.
Matthew 1:18–25 teaches us that the birth of Jesus was not accidental, not immoral, and not ordinary. It was divinely planned, prophetically promised, and powerfully purposeful. In this passage, we learn who Jesus is, why He came, and how God works through obedient faith.

I. THE CRISIS OF MARY’S PREGNANCY (vv. 18–19)
> “When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost.”
Mary is legally engaged to Joseph. In Jewish culture, betrothal was binding—ending it required a divorce. When Mary is found pregnant, it creates a serious moral and social crisis.
Joseph faces three options:
Public accusation (which could lead to Mary’s death)
Private divorce
Trusting God without understanding everything
Verse 19 shows Joseph’s character. He is just (righteous) and compassionate. He seeks to protect Mary from public shame.
Lesson: God often begins His greatest works in situations that look like confusion and crisis. Faith is tested before it is rewarded.

II. THE COMFORT OF GOD’S REVELATION (vv. 20–21)
> “But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream…”
God speaks when Joseph is thinking, struggling, and uncertain. The angel gives divine reassurance:
Mary’s child is conceived by the Holy Spirit
The child is male
The child has a mission
The child has
