In remembrance of the great Battle of Adwa, March 1, 1896, in which the Ethiopian Empire was able to decisively defeat the Army of the Kingdom of Italy and guarantee Ethiopian independence.
The Italians had assembled the largest and best armed European army ever to take the field in Africa until that time, but were decisively crushed when even those in rebellion against the the government dropped everything to join the Emperor to repulse the invader. Pictured here are some of the great heroes of that day.
Pictured below, top center, Emperor Menelik II and Empress Taitu. Immediately below them from left to right Ras (later King) Mikael of Wollo, King Tekle Haimanot of Gojjam and Ras Wolde Giorgis Aboye (later King of Gondar). From top to bottom on the left, Ras Mengesha Yohannes Prince of Tigrai, Ras Makonnen Wolde Mikael of Harrar (father of Emperor Haile Selassie I), Ras Sebhat Aregawi of Agame (who dropped his rebellion to join Menelik against the Italians), and Ras Alula Engida (known as Abba Nega and governor of Hamasein displaced by the Italians). From top down on the right, Dejazmatch Balcha Saffo (known as Abba Nefso), Dejazmach Demissew Nesibu, Fitawrari Hapte Giorgis Dinagde (known as Abba Mela). Across the bottom from left to right after the Conquering Lion of Judah, are Ras Tessema Nadew, Dejazmatch Bahta Hagos of Akale Guzai (who crossed over to the Ethiopian side from the Italians in Eritrea and was killed in the lead up to the battle),and Ras Wolde Mikael Solomon, hereditary lord of Hamasein who also crossed from the Italian ruled Eritrea to fight alongside Ethiopian forces).
God bless the souls of these great warriors. Ethiopians can be proud of who they are thanks to these great leaders.
