Diocesan KMSS offices are independent and official social arm of the respective diocese. WHAT WE DO
---------------
KMSS works in five key areas; Education, Health, Livelihoods, Social Protection, Disaster Risk Reduction and Emergency Response. HOW WE STARTED
--------------------
The Catholic Bishop's Conference of Myanmar (CBCM) started a process to organize social development activities in the Church since 1988 as an expression of its concern for the basic communities. A Social Animation Programme was launched in 1998 to raise awareness and build the capacities of priests, religious, and lay leaders and in anticipation of setting up Karuna Offices. A Karuna meeting was held in Loikaw from 24 to 28 September 2000. There were 200 participants representing 9 Dioceses. The participants drafted the KMSS statutes and elected the Executive Committee. The First Karuna General Assembly was held in 2001 in the premises of the CBCM in Yangon. From this General Assembly, Karuna National Office was inaugurated on the feast day of Patroint Saint of St. Vincent de Paul Sept 27,2001. "Karuna Myanmar Social Service" was approved as the official name, the vision and mission reformulated in the National Office in 2005. In 2015 KMSS received temporary registration and its name was changed into "Karuna Mission Social Solidarity".

In collaboration with Nawng Hkying Parish, KMSS-Myitkyina successfully organized a Green Campaign at the Queen of Heaven Church in Nawng Hkying Village on June 11, 2026. The planted species included Pyinkado (ironwood), Gangaw (Ceylon ironwood), Seinban (flamboyant), Asian Eugenia, Mhai-Lein, and bougainvillea, a total of 225 trees and flowers together with the active participation of (99) participants—including local villagers, internally displaced persons (IDPs), and staff.

The campaign aimed to protect the environment, reduce disaster risks, and create a greener, and more beautiful local community.
As part of its ongoing commitment to environmental conservation, KMSS-Myitkyina regularly carries out activities such as annual tree planting, trash/waste collection, and awareness training based on Pope Francis’s environmental encyclical, Laudato Si’.
