January 7 Gospel Matthew 4:12–17, 23–25
“The people who lived in darkness have seen a great light.”
Matthew tells us that Jesus begins His ministry not in power or comfort, but in Galilee, a place marked by struggle, poverty, and spiritual darkness. Into that darkness, Jesus brings light. Not a theory, not a law, but Himself. This light shines through His message: “Repent, for the Kingdom of heaven is at hand.” Repentance is not about fear; it is about turning toward the light, choosing hope over despair, and life over darkness. Jesus teaches, heals, and restores. Wherever His light shines, sickness gives way to healing, fear to faith, and isolation to belonging. The crowds follow Him because light attracts those who are tired of the dark. This Gospel reminds us that no darkness is too deep for Christ. When we feel lost, wounded, or afraid, Jesus comes to us, just as He did in Galilee, to be our light. And once we have seen that light, we are called to reflect it to others.
Christ is the light. Let us walk in Him.
