Concern Over Ha Ts'osane Dumpsite: A Call for Environmental Justice and Spiritual Solidarity
The persistent presence of the Ha Ts'osane dumpsite continues to threaten the communities of Ha Ts'osane, Tsโenola, and Motimposo. Now, with the site actively burning, the danger has intensified. Thick, toxic smoke fills the air, endangering the health of nearby residents particularly the elderly, asthma patients, and congregants of St. Andrewโs Tsโenola. The stench, ash, and airborne chemicals create a daily crisis for those forced to breathe it in.
This is not just a local concern. As Professor Mosotho George has stated, "We've shown that harmful chemicals from plastics are not just a global story, they are already here, right under our feet in Maseru." The reality is that this environmental hazard is a silent killer. It affects not only the earth, but also the lungs, the dignity, and the faith of those living in its shadow.
In response, local churches united in a prayer vigil march last year among the religious leaders Rev Fr Maseru Mongalo was present, raising a collective plea for divine intervention and governmental accountability. As Green Anglicans in the Diocese of Lesotho, we see this as a call to action not just spiritually, but socially and ecologically.
We are stewards of creation and must not allow this injustice to go unchallenged. The people of these communities deserve better: clean air, safe streets, and the assurance that their well-being matters. Our hope is that our voices will stir hearts, awaken action, and bring lasting change.
