*CANCER OF THE MIXED MULTITUDE*

🔑 *KEY VERSE* : “And the mixt multitude that was among them fell a lusting: and the children of Israel also wept again, and said, Who shall give us flesh to eat?” (Numbers 11:4).

📜 *READ* : Numbers 11:1-6

There is an important truth in the Bulgarian proverb: “If you find yourself taking two steps forward and one step backwards, invariably it’s because you have mixed associations in your life.”

This was the case of the Jews who had the misfortune of travelling with a mixed multitude on a divinely ordered trip. The Israelites’ journey from Egypt to the Promised Land was anything but smooth. The ungrateful and faithless attitude they exhibited from time to time not only prolonged their journey but also earned them divine wrath. One significant aspect of their misconduct is murmuring. In spite of the divine interventions they had, they complained about the discomfort and fatigue of prolonged travelling in the wilderness. This time, God showed His displeasure for their murmuring by sending an unusual fire that consumed the extremities of their camp.

The source of the disgruntlement is not hidden: the mixed multitude, a class of foreigners who accompanied the Israelites during their exodus from Egypt. They became constant instigators of trouble in the camp of Israel. Not long after, God’s fire of judgment against the murmurers was put out, the mixed multitude initiated a fresh complaint about their dietary preferences. They desired animal-based food and vegetable dainties that they enjoyed in Egypt. They loathed the manna by which they had been sustained for a long time. The mixed multitude lacked the understanding and grace of God’s people, and therefore, could not conform to divine demands.

Today’s church has a fair share of the scourge of the mixed multitude. The modern mixed multitude consists of professing Christians who are merely drawn to the glamour associated with the faith. They do not have the requisite grace or spiritual depth of genuine conversion. Like tares among the wheat, they have a form of godliness but deny its power. As in the case of Israel, the presence of such unconverted people in the church is a drawback. It is also eternally damning to be part of the mixed multitude. How we need to look out for the cancer of mixed multitude and deal with it before it festers on us.

📜📜*READ:* PHILIPPIANS 4:8,9

*MESSAGE:*
American preacher Ray Pritchard made this remarks about the popular acronym, garbage in garbage out (GIGO), on July 24, 1994: “When the computer revolution had just begun, the pioneers in the field coined a brandnew word. In those days, not many people knew how to operate a computer and those who did made many mistakes. Sometimes, the neophyte experts entered the wrong data only to discover (that) universal truth” about just what computers can do.

What is true of computers is also true of the human mind. That comparison is apt because the human mind has often been compared to a computer. In fact, the human mind is far more complex than the most advanced computer ever designed. But the basic principle of GIGO or Garbage In, Garbage Out is still true: what you get depends on what you put into it. Paul the apostle drew those parallels in this brief sermon to the Philippians. He recommends, through divine inspiration, the need to watch what we input into our minds. Before thoughts are accepted and processed, they should, of necessity, pass through these gates: Are they honest, just, pure, lovely, of good report? Is there any virtue in them? Can this be a praiseworthy idea? Paul believes that if our input passes these important filters, our output will bring joy and excitement, with happy living.

The human mind and the computers are similar in many ways. Both use electrical signals to send messages. The brain uses chemicals to transmit information; the computer uses electricity. Even though electrical signals travel at high speeds in the nervous system, they travel even faster through the wires in a computer. Both transmit information. The average person is said to have 10,000 separate thoughts each day. That works out to be about 3.5 million thoughts a year. Simply imagine what happens to us if those thoughts are negative. Negative thoughts can destroy one’s life. We require the spiritual weapons of warfare to erase, pull down and bring into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ.

The ultimate conclusion from this important passage is about safeguarding our lives by controlling our thoughts. Impose the recommended necessary gates in your mind to filter in what should engage your thoughts in the course of our brief, earthly sojourn. This is the secret to a happy and fulfilled life.

*MESSAGE*:
An anonymous Christian author once wrote; “A life of sacrifice and purity is the most fragrant aroma that can rise to God.” This thought captures the heart of today’s text.

In the passage, God guided the Israelites on the meat or grain offerings. This sacrifice beautifully illustrates how our devotion and gifts can create pleasing aroma for God. The offering was made up of flour, oil, and frankincense. They symbolise the very best we have, reminding us to give our all to God rather than just the scraps. This in a way acknowledges God as the Source of our supplies and expresses our indebted gratitude to Him for the supplies.

This principle is just as relevant today. Even though we are no longer mandated to bring flour, oil, or incense to God, we are still expected to make sacrificial devotion as we completely offer our best to Him. For New Testament believers, it is simply never enough to worship and offer unto God routinely. The sacrifice of Christ on the cross at Calvary demands the whole of our time, talent, treasure, temple, nay our totality. To offer anything less is an act of ingratitude and lack of God’s supreme and sovereign love that elicited our glorious salvation.

When we come to worship God, therefore, we should always strive to give our best with sincere hearts and intentions. We must avoid mixing our worship with hypocrisy, selfish desires, pride, or other forms of sin. So, take a moment today to reflect on your motivations and your heart as you worship God. Avoid the leaven of sin or anything that can hinder your relationship with the Lord and thus limit the gracious outflow of His manifold blessings to us.

In professional letter writing, introductory remarks make a profound statement. They serve as a window into the soul of the writer while establishing a hint of the relationship between him and the reader. You would, therefore, not be expected to go too far into the correspondence before correctly identifying the personalities at work.

The figures in our text are two church leaders. One of them, the beloved Apostle Paul and the other a Greek believer, Sosthenes. The writing was to the church in Corinth, the assembly the Lord used Paul to establish in his 18-month stay there. The writers are messengers of Christ checking on fellow saints. They are kindred spirits, brought together by Christ from different nationalities and sociocultural backgrounds. Paul is moved by this bond to shower anointed benediction on the Corinthians.

Similarly, in the absence of physical contact caused by long distances, church leaders can write to their members to put them in remembrance of the abiding teachings in the Bible. It could be an opportunity to caution them against straying on dangerous paths. It could also serve as a means of praying for them just as Paul did as a loving leader.

Oral ministration can be complemented with literatures for edification. The Church today has better and more efficient means of reaching the unsaved and establishing the members. Technology has made the world a global community and millions can be reached in seconds through spoken and written messages of salvation. Believers should maximise the use of these avenues of winning souls and building up the body of Christ.

“Thus all the work that Solomon made for the house of the LORD was finished: and Solomon brought in all the things that David his father had dedicated; and the silver, and the gold, and all the instruments, put he among the treasures of the house of God” (2 Chronicles 5:1).

*📜📜TEXT:2 Chronicles 5:1-10*

*MESSAGE*:
It is not every time that people set out to work on a project that they get it finished as planned. In fact, quite a number of projects never get to leave the drawing board. They are aborted as soon as they are conceived. Some do not get finished as initially planned. They get modified along the way, either by having it scaled down or broadened. Quite so many get abandoned mid-way as a result of a number of factors. One of such is the Marble Hill Nuclear Power Station in Hanover, Indiana, USA. It was nearly 80% complete at an estimated cost of $7.4 billion when it was abandoned in 1984 due to construction issues and safety concerns. Only a very few projects get finished as planned.

One of such was the completion of Solomon’s Temple in our text today. The passage describes the completion of the temple and the solemn transfer of the Ark of the Covenant into its new and permanent home. This epoch making event is very symbolic as it highlights God’s faithfulness in fulfilling His promises to His people.

The event here is very significant and instructive to us today. It encourages us to trust God’s timing and His ability to complete His works in our lives. We would recall that King David first conceived the idea of building a temple of God; but God felt the time was not right then, aside the fact that his hands had shed much blood in the prosecution of wars. We should not get discouraged if we have an initial delay or set back in our well-conceived plan and project. If we get a “no” at first, it may only mean the time is not ripe yet. If we keep trusting God, He will certainly make all things beautiful in His time. If God gives you a vision or a promise, He will surely bring it to fruition at the appropriate time. Simply keep moving on in faith!

There is the place for proper planning and preparation, if we ever hope to get our projects finished as planned. It is not enough to have beautiful and laudable ideas and plans either for our lives, family, business or ministry. It is very essential that we make proper preparation and adequate provisions to carry our plans through to the end. We have to be very deliberate, intentional, realistic and have a fixed purpose while also trusting in the Lord to finish well whatever we are embarking on.

In the world, falling at the feet of royalty, power and persons of fame and wealth is almost an everyday experience that only massages the ego of vain men and women. It bestows no spiritual gain on the one dispensing the honours. On the other hand, there are infinite benefits when a believer, beholding the stupendous splendour of the supernatural, not only goes down in worship, but also passes out, to be brought back to life by the divine.

When Daniel, who had been fasting and supplicating for the suffering land of Judah, finally saw a confounding vision as an answer to his prayers, he was paralysed and dumb with all natural strength drained. He needed to be filled with a greater energy. The angelic visitor provided it, and the prophet became? strong anew. He was assured of his status in heaven. The angel described him as a “man greatly beloved.” Peace was pronounced upon him. And more revelation followed.

All who follow Christ are the apple of God’s eye. We are highly favoured by heaven. Therefore, we are to fall in reverence only to God in gratitude for the deep apocalyptic truths He exposes us to, but deny the gentile world. We are “greatly beloved” by God because of Christ. We can intercede when our loved ones and the land are writhing in pain for transgressions against heaven. We should not be closet Christians, unperturbed by what is troubling our community.

We are guaranteed expected answers to petitions in the name of Jesus. Daniel had that sure and unbending standing before God and His angels; and so he was not afraid to take personal and national challenges before heaven. He was prepared to wait if there was a little delay in response. For he knew the answer would come, eventually.

*MESSAGE:* Lauren McMah of the Australian news site, news.com.au, once reported on Alnwick Poison Garden in Northumberland, United Kingdom. He wrote that on the gate leading to this green oasis is a grim message, a genuine warning of what lurks inside: ‘These plants can kill.’ That is the sign that greets intrepid visitors to this sinister botanical wonderland that is home to 100 of the world’s most lethal plants. Tourists have fallen ill and fainted there, having flouted stern advice to not smell or touch anything that grows inside. “At first glance, it seems like a typical English country garden: lush trees billowing over manicured topiaries, pretty blooms dotted along gravel paths, and everything neatly enclosed in an antique-style, wrought-iron fence. But nothing here is really that innocent.”

Jacob, on his way from Haran, settled in a Canaanite city of Shechem that looked well, from the outside, but with a lot of danger within. Instead of fulfilling his promise to God, to return to Bethel, the place he first had an encounter with God twenty years earlier, he decided to settle in that city, twenty miles to Bethel. In the event, it turned out to be a very wrong decision. Things appeared to have gone well at first. The land was good for his cattle; and the inhabitants of the land were friendly. But soon, his daughter Dinah, toured the city. She was viciously r***d by Shechem, the prince of the city, an incident that precipitated a bitter response that led to the death of all the men in the city, the capture of the women and the confiscation of their cattle.

Disobedience has always been at the centre of our troubles. Instead of obeying God explicitly, we rely on our human judgment and choose where to stay and what to do. It is bewildering that Jacob ignored all the instructions, and the vows he made years earlier, to return to Bethel and raise an altar to God. Why would he stay in that city? Perhaps, he was carried away by their good land, full of pasture for his flock, and the outward hospitality showed by the people of the land.

Like the poisoned garden of Northumberland, the place we are attracted to, may look beautiful and inviting. At the end, however, our lives may be endangered by the hidden poison undetectable to the eye. It is just a matter of time before real danger begins to manifest. Do not wait until calamity comes before you move towards the direction of God. Those who tarry long in the poisoned garden, may eventually lose their lives before realising the grave cost of their mistakes.

On 13th November, 2021, El Sistema, a National Institution of Youth and Children’s Orchestras and Choirs of Venezuela, earned a place in the Guinness World Records as the largest orchestra ever. The symphony orchestra consisted of 8,573 musicians and was composed of piccolos, flutes, oboes, clarinets, horns, cornets, trumpets, trombones, tubas, and violins, among other instruments. The musicians, aged between 12 and 77, played a piece by Tchaikovsky: the Slavic March. It was a moving spectacle.

As stunning as El Sistema’s prize-winning performance was, it will come nowhere close to the spectacular concert captured in today’s Bible text. Imagine an ensemble composed of myriads of angels, cherubim, and representatives of the redeemed mortals in unison with the universe singing the praise of Christ, the Lamb of God! The occasion? This is one of the revelations that Apostle John saw on the Island of Patmos, in which he witnessed a mysterious but significant book about future events. The scroll, presented by God Himself, was so perfectly sealed that none in heaven or earth but Christ was able to unseal it. This feat occasioned this unprecedented ascription of praise to the Lord.

Christ is referred to as the Lamb, a reference to His redemptive sacrifice for the salvation of mankind and His meekness and innocence. Earlier, He was introduced as the Lion of the Tribe of Judah, denoting His earthly ancestral trace to Judah (prophetically dubbed the lion’s whelp) and His everlasting dominion. Only He, the occupant of these offices, in whom dwells “all the fulness of the Godhead,” could explain and execute God’s purposes and plans concerning the government of the world and the Church. For all these, He earns the praise and worship of angels, men, and indeed, all creature.

This revelation, doubtless, deepened Apostle John’s conviction about Christ’s divinity and power. Very often, we get so familiar with the name of the Lord Jesus that we lose sight of His sovereignty over us and all things. But if we are conscious of His true worth, we cannot help but lend our hearts and voices to the heavenly song of the ransomed.

*MESSAGE:*
Throughout generations, a remnant has always been found even in the darkest era, and God notices and evidently blesses them. Running through the Book of Malachi is a thread of conversations between the loving, longsuffering Elohim and a lawless lip-serving, egg-headed people. While God’s love would not let go a recalcitrant unrepentant nation that had experienced God’s mercy firsthand, the people would not let go what the Lord hates. God was engrossed in correcting, convicting and calling rebellious Israel to return, but they were engaged in plunging deeper into filth and the stench of sin and corruption.

The text shows the wholehearted word from the Lord sent to His halfhearted worshippers who delighted in living in denial and querying the rationale behind God’s rebuke. The instruction is unmistakable: “Return, repent and accept my love with wholehearted obedience.” Today, as in the days of Malachi, many believers are also lukewarm in their faith. While they profess to serve and love God, they actually fix their focus and preference in life on themselves. And as they grapple with their self-inflicted challenges, they impugn God’s love and faithfulness in their hearts.

The Lord, however, does not change. He reaffirmed His promises to the faithful few saints in contrast to the sceptical majority. While the ungodly were uttering hard sayings, those who feared God remained bonded in a lateral relationship, defended God’s dealings, and encouraged one another to love and trust Him. They also had a vertical relationship, effected in their fellowship in the Spirit with God and obedience to His word.

In His omniscience, God knows and notes those who serve Him; He keeps their record in the book of remembrance.

The renowned American author, C.S. Johnson, shares a family lesson about a difficult situation involving her four-year-old son, Michael. When she found him crying uncontrollably, she knelt beside him and asked if he was hurt. Michael responded that his father had said a bad word to him. The author became curious. The author asked what the word was, and Michael blurted out “Obey.” The author now asks her Heavenly Father to keep her from thinking that “obey” is a bad word, as her son did.

Like poor little Michael, many people who have the privilege of reading and hearing God’s word stumble at the point of obeying it. Today’s Bible passage opens the great events revealed to and recorded by Apostle John on the Island of Patmos, to which persecution banished him. The revelation concerns _“the things which are”_ (the state of the Christ’s church then) and _“things which must shortly come to pass”_ (the future state of the church till the end of this world). It contains not only predictions, but also necessary instructions, warnings and insights that are essential for our spiritual guidance, nourishment and wellbeing. In this introduction to the book, we see the involvement of the Trinity, particularly the personality and role of Christ as our Mediator in whom we must place our faith.

The key verse emphasises the imperative of reading, hearing and keeping the word. It is not enough to peruse and perceive the word; the blessing lies in the performance of it. Many professing Christians have an excellent knowledge of God’s word, but when the chips are down, they do not obey God. If we are going to profit from His word, the Lord expects us to keep it in our hearts and allow it to influence our decisions, attitudes, ambitions, associations, and actions. The faithful are redeemed and elevated as kings and priests to reign with Christ, whose return is their delightful hope. Presently, they offer spiritual sacrifice to God and triumph over sin, Satan and the world.
Today, there are many professing Christians who cannot endure sound doctrine, but after their own lusts have heaped to themselves teachers, having itching ears. This has resulted in many having _“a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof.”_ But if we seek His blessings, God’s demand remains – read, hear and heed the word.

Knowledge of God’s word without a willingness to obey it afflicts doubly
