[13] Later, they sent some of the Pharisees and Herodians to Jesus to catch him in his words.
[14] They came to him and said, “Teacher, we know that you are a man of integrity. You aren’t swayed by others, because you pay no attention to who they are; but you teach the way of God in accordance with the truth. Is it right to pay the imperial tax to Caesar or not?
[15] Should we pay or shouldn’t we?” But Jesus knew their hypocrisy. “Why are you trying to trap me?” he asked. “Bring me a denarius and let me look at it.”
[16] They brought the coin, and he asked them, “Whose image is this? And whose inscription?” “Caesar’s,” they replied.
[17] Then Jesus said to them, “Give back to Caesar what is Caesar’s and to God what is God’s.” And they were amazed at him.

Ada used her singing talent only for fame and money until her voice suddenly failed. Doctors found nothing wrong. In prayer, she realized she had misused a gift that belonged to God. She repented and began singing to glorify Him. Her voice returned, stronger than before. God is the Creator and Sustainer of the universe; His authority and sovereignty can neither be queried nor disputed by any human court.

In today's passage, some Pharisees and Herodians attempted to catch Jesus by his words; hence, they requested his opinions regarding paying taxes to Caesar, their Roman overlord. To douse the tension and affirm their lack of wit, Jesus asked for a denarius, a coin bearing the portrait and inscription of their political leader. He gave a verdict that as good citizens, everyone should respect human institutions and governments. However, he further educated his audience about the need to cultivate the right attitude towards God, who ultimately ensures their sustenance. God should be worshipped and respected because all things belong to Him.

As a believer, fulfil your responsibilities as a citizen, pay taxes, obey the law, and respect leaders, but never at the expense of your loyalty to God. Your true identity and eternal purpose are defined not by earthly rulers, but by God. Give Him what is due.
