Text: John 11:25

Theme: "Raised From The Dead"

"This passage is said by Jesus right before he raises Lazarus from the dead. This was the last miracle performed in John's Gospel, arguably the greatest miracle as well. I believe that this miracle served a greater purpose than simply impressing the crowds that saw Lazarus raised from the dead. It gave credence to everything that Jesus claimed up to that point. It gave his followers the hope and belief that Jesus truly was the life and that if and when he died, he could be reborn. More importantly, if he could raise Lazarus and himself from the dead because of their belief in him, he could raise ANYONE. This is the most important message that I take from this passage.

If Jesus died and remained dead, how could he claim to be the resurrection and the life? He couldn't and his followers would realize this. He could be a great teacher, but the covenant that God had with humanity would not be fulfilled. It requires all sections to come true in order for our sins to be forgiven. As Lazarus resurrection proved, if we believe in Christ we can be literally resurrected. Although we will not have the same opportunity as Lazarus, we too will be resurrected through our faith.

This is the fundamental tenet of Christianity. We do not win God' favor through rituals and attending church. We do so through our faith. "O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory? The sting of death is sin; and the strength of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ." (1 Corinthians 15:55-57)"

Text: Jeremiah 15:16

Theme: "You Are His Own"

"God is not a distant God who looks at us as if we are His creation and nothing more. God is our Father. He sees us as His children and He knows every single one of us by name. Think of that. The Almighty God, who created the heavens, the earth, and the entire universe, is concerned about you. He doesn't see you as another figure on the face of the earth. He sees you as his own and He is concerned about everything that has to do with you and your life. We should find it comforting to know that we belong to a loving Father who is concerned about everything about us.

This is what sets Christianity aside from every other form of religion and belief system. It is the thing many who have denounced the gospel fail to understand. Non-believers are unable to comprehend that such an Almighty God would go to the ends of the earth for the beings He created. It is a foreign concept to those who live their lives according to their human nature, which is devoid of God.

But as Christians we know that we do not belong to a faraway God. We belong to a God who knows the number of hairs on our heads. When we are in pain, He feels it and he desires to make us feel better. When we grow in His word, He rejoices and continues to push us on. We belong to a God who has spoken so many words of assurance and belonging into our lives, we can never doubt his stance toward us."

Text: Isaiah 32:17

Theme: "Righteous Works"

"How do you spend the majority of your time? Do you feel that the time you spend on a daily basis is mostly spent wisely? Many people are successful to the eye but not successfully within themselves. The work of the righteous quiets the soul, granting them a peaceful assurance forever.

I have heard a quote that I liked: "Success without fulfillment is the ultimate failure." Having money, fame, and even health without doing righteous work or feeling fulfilled about how you spend your time is not success at all. Being at peace with the actions that you do on a daily basis is true success. Having your actions and thoughts justified in the eyes of God is true fulfillment.

How do we seek a more righteous and peaceful existence?

Romans 5:1-2 - Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:

2 Timothy 1:7 - For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.

Philippians 4:7 - And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

Put simply, when we, believers in Christ, live in accordance with the teachings of Jesus, loving and obeying his commands, we will have peace with God through Jesus. We are not meant to live in fear; God has granted us the power of love, peace, and safety. It is our own choices which are righteous or not, justified or not. Live righteously and you shall be peaceful."

Text: Psalms 19:7,8

Theme: "The Law of Life"

"The law of the Lord was a law of perfection. In the many tablets that were given to the people, every law was a description of what man would need to do in order to meet the standard of God. God's nature is one of perfection. Infirmities and sin are unable to withstand the presence of God because of who He is. It is not that He chases anyone away, no. He does the complete opposite. He draws people closer to Him through His son.

People are able to delight in the law of God when they are in Christ Jesus. When we are in Christ, we are not righteous in our own power. We are made righteous through the blood of Christ and this allows us to view the law with Christ's eyes.

As sinners, the law of God appears to be oppressive because of the way in which we realize that we are helpless on our own. The reason why the law was unable to be fulfilled by a man in his own power was because of his sinful nature. One cannot attain righteousness through sin. Sin and righteousness cannot coexist.

This is why Jesus had to come to earth, fulfill the law, and set us free from the bo***ge of sin – so that we could become righteous. Now that we are righteous through Christ Jesus, we are able to look at the law of the Lord with more appreciative eyes.

When Jesus Christ died and resurrected, a new law came into order – the Law of Life. The Law of life is attained through receiving salvation. When we receive salvation, we receive eternal life and it changes our entire spirit beings. We no longer live as ourselves but we live as Jesus Christ because he dwells in us."

Text: Psalms 145:1-5

Theme: "Tell the Children of the Glory of God"

"This is a good time to stop in our Advent preparations to make sure that we are passing on to future generations the goodness of God and his wondrous deeds. Have we already begun telling our children the story of Christmas from Luke's Gospel? After all, the media is already telling them the story of Santa Claus, Rudolph, Frosty the Snowman and any number of movies that have nothing to do with Jesus! We are the generation that is responsible for declaring God's mighty act to the next generation and if not us, then who? Are we still taking time to reflect on how our behavior is witnessing our faith? If not, we're only a third of the way through Advent so we still have time. That changes have we made? Are we kinder, more compassionate, and forgiving? Are we truly praising God every day? We declare that we are followers of Jesus, but are we sure that the path we are on is the one he wants us to be on? This is a tough time. There are so many distractions. If you work in retail, you are probably working overtime and are stressed because you don't have time to do your own shopping. I remember the days when I needed to work right up to the last minute. So, instead of stressing, I would pile the kids in the car, let the older ones pick up something for the grandparents, while I took the youngest and bought everything I needed to get all at once. Of course, I didn't have much money, so I could only get one or two things each. I can't see the point of going into debt for birthdays or holidays. Take some time today to breathe in the love of Christ and prepare the gift you are going to give him for his birthday."

Inspiration

We trust the Lord to deliver us from all battles we face in our time here on earth, and He always does! We do not always agree with His timing or method, but we understand that God knows what is best for us spiritually and physically. He works all things out for our good. When we feel broken or scared, we have faith that everything will be okay because our peace and happiness are priorities to our heavenly Father.

Text: Matthew 21:33-35, 38-40

Theme: "To Whom Do I Listen?"

"Jesus let the chief priests and Pharisees understand that he was speaking about himself, and them. God gave the promise to the Israelites, and they rebelled at every turn. He had given them the Law so that they would understand what was required of them and when they turned away, he sent the prophets, and time and again they ignored them and often killed them. And now, the Lord of the Vineyard has sent his Son, Jesus. Do they listen to him? No. Their reaction to Jesus will be the same as to the prophets, they will have him rejected, beaten and crucified. What they don't realize is that this will only be the beginning of the Son's reign. Jesus will rise from the dead and the world will never be the same. Because the Jews rejected Jesus as the Messiah, the apostles turned to the Gentiles who were welcoming of this new Way of believing. This parable did not influence the chief priest and the Pharisees to change their minds about Jesus; it made them angry and more determined to kill him. How do we feel when friends or family call us on our actions which may not be how we are called to live? If we are not always truthful, do we admit to it and try to change? Or, does it make us angry and possibly walk away from friends or relatives? It's often the child who is most like ourselves that we have problems with because we see in them what we don't always like in ourselves and it bothers us. Most of us do not like to be reminded of our faults! But just like the chief priests and the Pharisees, we, too, need to be called to account for our actions so that we can repent, ask for forgiveness, and return to the open arms of our God."

Text: Psalms 119:65-69

Theme: "May I Humbly Accept Your Commands"

"We say that we believe in God's commandments and that we observe his word, but we still need help. Good judgment and knowledge are two of the gifts that the Holy Spirit has given to us. When we face difficult decisions, all we need to do is ask for guidance. Just like the psalmist we can go astray. All we need to do is turn around and repent. Sometimes we don't have enough information to be able to make good decisions, so we ask for the gift of knowledge. God is always ready to help us out. Sometimes it's knowledge that we need, other times it's good judgment. However, just knowing the right decision to make isn't enough. We still need the courage to follow through. I was meeting this morning with my regular Bible Study group and one of the members was saying that she wishes she was the person she wanted to be. Now I believe that God leads to be the person that He wants us to be. But I also believe that we don't always listen very well. God wants us to be the best us, not the best someone else. We are not all called to be missionaries in foreign countries. We are not all called to be involved in professional ministries. We are called to be disciples. Just because we don't have the ability, the resources, or the time to go off to foreign lands, doesn't mean that we don't have a responsibility to share the Good News of salvation. It just means that we need to do it in the circumstances God gives to us. I just switched by dish towels from summer ones to autumn ones. One of the summer dish towels had a saying on it that is appropriate for this: "Bloom where you're planted." God has given us our mission field and expects us to plant the seeds wherever we are."
