A brother in Corinth was having sexual relations with his father's wife, and the church was ignoring it. The Corinthian church was even boasting about its tolerance. The apostle Paul rebuked the church, saying, "I have already passed judgment on the one who did this" (1 Corinthians 5:3). "Hand this man over to Satan, so that the sinful nature may be destroyed and his spirit saved on the day of the Lord" (verse 5).

Church discipline was administered not to punish the offender but to save him or her on the day of judgment.

Finally, Paul said it was not his business to judge people outside the church. "God will judge those outside" (1 Corinthians 5:13).
