Good Friday is a solemn Christian holiday commemorating the crucifixion, suffering, and death of Jesus Christ at Calvary. It is considered "good" or holy because, despite the immense sorrow, it marks the voluntary sacrifice to atone for humanity's sins, setting the stage for Resurrection Sunday.
The Seven Last Words of Jesus on the Cross are seven final phrases uttered during his crucifixion, representing themes of forgiveness, salvation, relational love, divine abandonment, distress, triumph, and final trust in God. They are, in traditional order:
"Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do" (Luke 23:34) — Forgiveness: Jesus prays for his executioners, demonstrating unconditional love and mercy.
"Truly, I say to you, today you will be with Me in paradise" (Luke 23:43) — Salvation: A promise of grace to the repentant thief, highlighting redemption.
"Woman, behold your son! ... Behold your mother!" (John 19:26-27) — Relationship: Jesus ensures his mother, Mary, is cared for by the disciple John, creating a new spiritual family.
"My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" (Matthew 27:46, Mark 15:34) — Abandonment: Jesus expresses the agony of carrying humanity’s sin and experiencing separation from the Father.
"I thirst" (John 19:28) — Distress: Highlights Jesus's physical humanity and suffering, while fulfilling prophecy.
"It is finished" (John 19:30) — Triumph: A declaration that the mission of redemption is completed, and salvation is secured.
"Father, into your hands I commend my spirit" (Luke 23:46) — Reunion: Jesus willingly surrenders his life in ultimate trust to the Father.
