Alpha is a series of interactive sessions that freely explore the basics of the Christian faith. No follow up. No charge. Alpha really is for anyone who’s curious. The talks are designed to encourage debate and explore the basics of the Christian faith in a friendly, honest and informal environment. How the course works
The course is based around small groups of about 12 people, hosted by one or
two leaders whose role is to facilitate and encourage discussion. Courses vary in size, from one small group meeting in a home, to hundreds of people in a larger venue. Some courses are held over morning coffee or during a lunch hour, most are evening courses, typically lasting 2 hours. Whatever the course size, people tend to remain in the same small groups for the duration of the course so they can get to know each other, continue discussions and deepen friendships. Typically Alpha has around ten sessions, with a day or weekend away in the middle, and includes food, a short talk and a discussion at the end where you can share your thoughts. Course Content
The talks each week cover the following topics, which are discussed in smaller groups afterwards:
Week 1 - Who is Jesus? Week 2 - Why did Jesus Die? Week 3 - How can we have Faith? Week 4 - Why and how do I Pray? Week 5 - Why and how should I read the Bible? Week 6 - How does God Guide us? Week 7 - How can I Resist Evil? Week 8 - Why and how should I tell Others? Week 9 - Does God Heal Today? Week 10 - What about the Church? Day or weekend away
Who is the Holy Spirit? What does the Holy Spirit do? How can I be filled with the Holy Spirit? How can I make the most of the rest of my life? History
Alpha began as an introduction to the Christian faith for new Christians attending Holy Trinity Brompton church in central London. When curate Nicky Gumbel took over the running of Alpha at HTB in 1990, he noticed its appeal to those who would not describe themselves as Christians. Alpha became increasingly popular and, after the first training conference for church leaders in 1993, began running in other churches in the UK and around the world. Alpha International is a charity that publishes and promotes Alpha worldwide. Today it oversees not only Alpha, but also a range of associated ministries including Relationship Central, Worship Central, the William Wilberforce Trust, God at Work and St Paul's Theological Centre.
27 million people have done Alpha in 169 countries and 112 languages.
