We would like to invite you to the 150th year celebration of a continuously practiced Panguni Uthiram Kavadi tradition at Palani, a rare example of sustained cultural continuity through community participation.

The event will bring together devotees, community members, cultural practitioners, and public representatives, offering a meaningful opportunity for observation, engagement, and documentation of a living tradition in practice.

We would be honoured to have your presence, guidance, or academic interest in engaging with this occasion.

Please find the invitation and a brief note attached below for your reference.

Warm regards,
Sri Bala Dhandayuthapani Theertha Kavadi

The story of Skanda or Murugan fairly bursts with familiar motifs distributed worldwide. His most poignant image is that of the Bambino, the Holy Child (and Holy Terror) who is none other than the Sanat Kumara, Eternal Youth personified. He is born directly from the unknown and unknowable Source of all life.

However young and tender, he is the Jnana Pandita ('Expositor of Gnosis') who expresses the sacred wisdom of Summa Iruttal, the divine art of 'simply being', content and happy in the omnipresent busom of his Divine Mother, from whom he receives his weapon the bright gleaming Vel (lance) that is his Jnana-Shakti or 'Power of Gnosis'.

Skanda or Guha 'the Hidden one', we learn, appears on earth in a variety of guises to achieve the defeat of Terror personified with the application of his unfailing Jnana-Shakti, the brilliant 'spear' of wisdom that is fashioned from the sun and is represented as having the same color as the rising sun (Sanskrit: Bala-Suriya-Sama-Prabha). He is repeatedly urged to 'come' by those informed enthusiasts (bhaktas) who liken his appearance to the rising of the Sun at dawn.
