Never Again !

Today, the 3rd of August, marks 31 years since the Kattankudy Mosque massacre where LTTE gunmen opened fire at muslim men and boys who were performing isha prayers. They killed 147 men and boys by shooting them in the back in what was one of the worst civilian massacres in the war.

The incident sent shockwaves globally and bought home the grim and horrific reality of terrorism and how it destroyed and devastated all communities of this country. The New York times reported a survivor stating "Before I escaped from a side door and scaled a wall, I saw a Tiger rebel put a gun into the mouth of a small Muslim boy and pull the trigger."

For us it may be an incident from the past, but for the families of the 147 men and boys the wounds are as fresh and painful as they were 31years ago. We may forgive, but let us not forget the irreparable loss, hurt and pain that terrorism and extremism cause all those who are unfortunate enough to cross it’s path.

Whether it’s the Easter Sunday massacre, the Arantalawa massacre or the 1983 Black July massacre it should all be condemned equally as terrorism has no race or religion and does not discriminate amongst those it destroys. We have suffered enough with it, and it should never happen again.

We have a duty as Sri Lankans to stand firm, to stand stronger and to stand against the plague that is terrorism and extremism and to ensure that no family goes through what so many have gone through. We have a duty to build a safe, compassionate and inclusive Sri Lanka for all.
