Ruwanwelisaya – The Sacred Jewel of Anuradhapura

Rising gracefully into the skies of Anuradhapura, the magnificent Ruwanwelisaya (also known as Ruwanwali Maha Saya) stands as a beacon of Sri Lanka’s ancient glory and deep-rooted spiritual heritage. Built in the 2nd century BCE by the great King Dutugemunu, this sacred stupa is not just a marvel of ancient engineering, but also a profound symbol of devotion, unity, and the island’s unwavering faith in Buddhism.

Enshrining sacred relics of the Buddha, Ruwanwelisaya is one of the “Solosmasthana” – the sixteen sacred places of worship for Buddhists in Sri Lanka. Its perfectly proportioned dome, often bathed in pristine white, shines under the sun by day and glows with serenity under the stars by night. Surrounding the stupa are hundreds of carved elephant figures, each representing strength, loyalty, and protection.

For over two millennia, devotees have flocked to this site to pay homage, light oil lamps, offer flowers, and find peace in its sacred ambiance. It is not merely a monument of stone and mortar, but a living testament to a great king’s vision, a nation’s unity, and the undying reverence for the Dhamma.

Visiting Ruwanwelisaya is more than just seeing a historical site – it’s a spiritual journey, a moment of stillness, and a connection to the timeless roots of our culture.

May the blessings of Ruwanwelisaya bring peace, strength, and wisdom to all.

The Buddha's quote highlights the universal nature of suffering and impermanence. It acknowledges that death and decay are inevitable aspects of human existence. However, the quote suggests that the wise do not succumb to despair or grief, but instead embrace a deeper understanding of the nature of the world. By recognizing the impermanent nature of all things, the wise can cultivate a sense of detachment and equanimity, leading to a more peaceful and fulfilling life.
